The BBC has aired adaptations of several of his children's novels, such as The Boy In The Dress, Gangsta Granny and Grandpa's Great Escape, while Sky have filmed Ratburger. The terrible rating is perhaps harsh but it takes into account the expectations around a Walliam's book. Particularly looking at the Boy in the Dress, his first novel, I found it very difficult to like Bad Dad, for many reasons. Being very cynical, it felt like the kind of novel that an established and very successful novelist can bring out - formulaic and basically not very good - but know it will sell anyway. There are so many repeated motifs and jokes. Not always a bad thing - Dahl did it plenty, Dahl to whom Walliam's is impossibly compared - but some of the choices here result in it being difficult to distinguish elements of Bad Dad from his other books. The poor, hard-done-to father/son combo and a couple of irritating yet loving female characters on the side mirrors the cast of Demon Dentist a little too closely. Simply put, it felt like I'd read it before. My young relatives enjoyed the adventure and there are colour drawings throughout, on shiny paper, making it quite a heavy book. This all makes it pricey so ideally you'd want kids to share. With car races and unlikely drives - Rolls Royces are heavy and not aerodynamic - and a villainous crime boss leeching off shopkeepers and borrowers, there's excitement and more than a few life lessons. Not too many of the tedious lists this time but tedious and bad poetry. While the use of varied fonts for words within lines is fun for kids, it hurt my eyes and makes the book look scribbled on though new. But it's a kids' book. The book's blurb says the story is "a high-speed cops and robbers adventure with heart and soul about a father and son taking on the villainous Mr Big - and winning!
