This makes it almost as much a commentary upon Garion’s adventures as a prequel, and therefore something which should only be read after them despite the events it details mostly taking place beforehand. I will confess I found Polgara herself less than congenial company here, given her domineering and on occasions down right unpleasant personality. Set in the same universe as the Eddings' The Belgariad and The Malloreon, it is a prequel to the other series, although the framework story is set after the events of The Malloreon.

And Belgarath's constant ‘pulling of whiskers’ (if I remember the term correctly) did get very annoying.The most major problem I had with the book however was the repeated use of the prophecy as part of the plot.

His relationship with his wife, Poledra, was similar, becoming despondent for several hundred years after her death and mourning for over 3,000 — this was only ended by her reappearance in the Mallorean.While the first part of the book was quite good in revealing the younger Belgarath it wasn’t exactly revelatory and just a rehash of the first 10 books. In 1970 the couple lost custody of both children and were each sentenced to a year in jail in separate trials after pleading guilty to 11 counts of physical child abuse. Immersive, imaginative and rather amusing in places, I would recommend this to all lovers of epic fantasy. In short, Belgarath the Sorcerer provides a solid background on not just Belgarath's past, but some of the other characters' as well (most notably, of course, his fellow disciples of Aldur, including Polgara). It's not edge-of-your seat reading, because you already know where this story will end (it's a prequel as well as being THAT story.

Much of this novel consists of Belgarath wandering through the centuries, setting up his back story as he prepares for and participates in the numerous Events (please note the capital E) that repetitively bring the history of his universe to a head in The Belgariad. His ceaseless devotion was foredoomed to cost him that which he held most dear--even as his loyal service would extend through echoing centuries of loss, of struggle, and of ultimate triumph.Join them as they chronicle that fateful conflict between two mortally opposed Destinies, in a monumental war of men and kings and Gods. Once you have enjoyed all the other books, this gives you another chance to relive all the story, from beginning to end, with some extra details that just makes it enjoyable from beginning to end. He came across a young she-wolf in his travels, while traveling in the form of a wolf himself, and she followed him to his errand and back to his tower. Here is the full epic story of Belgarath, the great sorcerer learned in the Will and the Word on whom the fate of the world depends. After visiting the cursed Godless Ones who did not follow Gorim to Prolgu, he found himself in the Vale of Aldur.

Belgarath was strong enough to drag Zedar beneath the ground to pure rock, where he locked him up for the rest of eternity, or until he decided to let him go. The relationship between this endlessly snarky father and daughter is my favourite in the entire series, so getting to see this play out from the very beginning was a treat. Fortunately they retained their writing skills and both the Belgarath and Polgara volumes while clearly afterthoughts are well written and an excellent and entertaining read. He was said to be stronger than his daughter, having taken the full force of her enraged will without yielding, but his style was bolder and more overt, while hers dealt mostly with the minds of others and so was not remembered.This book was written as if it was written by one of the major characters of the Belgariad and the Mallorean, Belgarath the Sorcerer. During his later travels, after the apparent death of his wife, he helped his sorceress daughter Polgara protect the last of the royal line of Riva, as well as opposing the evil, one-eyed god Torak. Ebooks fulfilled through Glose cannot be printed, downloaded as PDF, or read in other digital readers (like Kindle or Nook). I read this before, because I was starved for more about these characters and had read "The Belgariad" and "The Mallorean" several times.
