If you’re a fan of social deduction games, Deception: Murder in Hong Kong is a no brainer to add to your list. It plays brilliantly well, pulling out all my favorite facets of a social deduction game: wild theories, impassioned speeches, betrayal, deep discussion, and a whole load of making up to do at the end. One Night Ultimate Werewolf distils the original social deduction experience of classic Werewolf (also known as Mafia) into a fast and fun 10-minute game that doesn’t need a large group. By condensing the action into just one round, the game removes the need for either a referee or player elimination, meaning no-one has to miss out on the action. The third round is played just like the second round with the Forensic Scientist drawing a new scene tile and replacing an existing one. The Forensic Scientist then gives the Lab Technician a thumbs up if the card selected was the Clue or Means card used in the murder and a thumbs down if it was not. In fact, my wife had the same reaction when I asked if she wanted to play. “Murder in Hong Kong” didn’t sound at all appealing.There’s one expansion for Deception: Murder in Hong Kong called Undercover Allies. It bulks out the original game with 54 new Means cards and 90 Clue Cards. The forensic scientist will then discard their clue and means cards and take the evidence tiles and shuffle them leaving the green and purple ones off to the side. The remaining tiles will be face down in a pile next to the forensic scientist. They will also get the rule book to read from the script provided. During the Allies Phase, the Forensic Scientist will once again guide the players through a round where they close their eyes and some take secret actions. If the cards chosen when a player attempts to solve the crime are the correct "Key Evidence" and "Means of Murder", the game ends immediately and the Forensic Scientist and Investigators (as well as the Witness) win. This is one of the few social deduction games where no-one is quite sure of their own position. Even if you start out as an innocent villager, it’s seldom a good idea to be completely open and honest. Don’t you just love when a game has a good moral? Like the new Clue and Means cards, these can simply be combined with the original Scene tiles from the base game. The new Scene tiles give the Forensic Scientist new options for describing the crime scene.After The first round of investigation, a second round will begin. The forensic scientist will draw a new brown evidence tile and will need to replace it with one of the other tiles, it may not replace the purple and green tile. Once the tile has been replaced the forensic scientist will place the marker on the evidence they wish to present to the investigators. The player receiving the Forensic Scientist card reveals; their identity and acts as the game master. They discard their Clue and Means cards and will play using the Scene tiles instead. All the other players keep their roles secret.
