Into the Forest (1996) is a dystopian novel by American author Jean Hegland. Set in the woods of Northern California in the not-too-distant future, it is the tale of two teenage sisters, Nell and Eva, who must learn to survive on their own after the collapse of civilization. Told through Nell's journal entries, the girls' struggle unfolds as Nell recalls memories from a time before—a time when things like water and food and basic technology were not luxuries—and grapples with the possible future ahead…and all the hope and terror contained therein. You can choose whether your class focus on adding in the words or pictures to complete the sentences.

In the summer of 1942, the Rabinowitz family narrowly escaped the Nazi ghetto in their Polish town by fleeing to the forbidding Bialowieza Forest. They miraculously survived two years in the woods—through brutal winters, Typhus outbreaks, and merciless Nazi raids—until they were liberated by the Red Army in 1944. After the war they trekked across the Alps into Italy where they settled as refugees before eventually immigrating to the United States. We have also included different variations of this question and answer activity to cater for both Year 1 and Year 2 classes. There are no strings of lights, no Christmas cards. There are no piles of presents, no long-distance phone calls from great-aunts and second cousins, no Christmas carols. There is no turkey, no plum pudding, no stroll to the bridge with our parents, no Messiah. This year Christmas is nothing but another white square on a calendar that is almost out of dates, an extra cup of tea, a few moments of candlelight, and, for each of us, a single gift. Most of the people in my book club enjoyed this and it really does come down to personal tastes. Some books are just poorly written but this really is not. For me, the element of gloom felt throughout the book, was simply not for me and the pacing was not to my liking either. At the end of the day, I have read so many books in this genre that I am a bit tired out on it as we ll.

There is no single ‘original’ version of an oral fairy tale, only endless permutations which evolve over time and change a little each time someone tells it anew. There is no beginning and no end to a fairy tale. Each tale has endless repetitions, giving birth to endless differences. There are some rather strange happenings and a rather dreary feeling throughout. This was an odd read I must say but I could not get into the book no matter how I tried. And I did try. This reviewer is better known for acerbity than unqualified recommendations, but I do now suggest you go straight out and buy this book.”
