The entire front panel drops down to reveal a bank of regularly used buttons, a common interface smartcard slot and a USB port, which enables you to move MP3 and JPEG files between a pen drive/external HDD and the unit’s hard-disk, turning it into a multimedia hub. But even more impressive is that you can archive TV recordings on an external hard-disk. NOTE: It may take 5~10 minutes to update software. Also if I use my smart tv to access to recordings I can find them under devices then foxsat but Sony's inbuilt video player plays only some of them, can't play some and some it just plays the video without any sound. Any idea what would cause that? Standard definition contents we had no qualms about either, comparable in quality to most Freeview services. The box does come with the “upscaling” promise, but what this really means is that you don’t lose any quality because you can use the HDMI. As with Freeview, quality also differs between providers with the quality seeming to deteriorate as you setup through numbers. BBC is generally very good, ITV seems to get progressively worse as you move up through ITV2+1 and so on. But the SD channel quality is nothing to complain about, until it's contrasted with the great HD content, which will simply leave you wanting more. Overall, it's a classy looking machine that's reassuringly well built. Inside is a 320GB hard disk that can store about 80 hours of HD programming or 200 hours of standard-definition (or somewhere in between for a mixture of the two formats). Please note that if the normal loader software is not equipped, the product may not be updated or operate properly after software update. The Humax Foxsat HDR can record over 200 hours of standard TV and up to 100 hours of high definition TV effortlessly. Even when you fill the very generous 500gb hardrive on the Humax Foxsat HDR there is a USB slot enabling you to save your favourite TV programs or films to an external hardrive or PC.

The unit’s onscreen operating system is fantastic. Designed with full colour, high-resolution graphics, friendly icons and clear text, even the biggest technophobes can make basic changes with no hassle at all. The digital TV displays are similarly clear, particularly the programme information banner (called the ‘i-plate’), which tells you everything you could possibly need to know about the current programme, including the resolution and the presence of Dolby Digital. Upscaling of standard-definition pictures is good enough too, and usefully, you can bypass that feature altogether by setting the video output options to 'original'. It's an asset any AV enthusiast will value and, as an added nod to convenience, the Humax will output 5.1 over HDMI, too.A Freesat Tune will only list TV and radio channels currently listed on the Freesat EPG (Electronic Programme Guide). For all other Free-To-Air (FTA) channels, a Manual Tune is required. That said there are a few exceptions, all other ITV regions, UTV and STV in both SD and HD have full 7 day programme listing as information for these is provided by Freesat. I did try the system flush before but assumed it wasn't working. However, as I soon found after delivery of the replacement Humax that both of the PSUs were working fine I began to be suspicious as to the thoroughness of my original troubleshooting. As it turned out, reading the instructions properly really helps and I was using a NTFS format USB not a FAT32 format when trying to flush the system. Once this was rectified, the system flush worked like a dream so for the benefit of other people looking for help in the future, definitely give that a go having read the instructions properly before you either a). despair or b). spend any money on bits.

Thanks Graham I can finally see them after reinstalling Twonky4 media server under root video folders but now I have more questions than before A service management system to display status of custom applications, start or stop them, and disable/enable boot-time autostart. I can play them on my phone via VLC but if I try to chromecast the recordings to my tv the picture is chopped halve with line going through etc. Any idea why I can't chromecast them? You do however misunderstand slightly, it doesn't replace the software you have, rather adds to it allowing some standard Linux and other enthusiast devoloped apps to the box. This allows you to for instance view the recordings remotely on smart TV's tablets etc (technically you can a add a DLNA server). Also copy recording files directly to a PC for viewing anywhere. ITV, however, is a problem. Its broadcast bit-rate is often much lower than the BBC's and it frankly looks dire in standard-definition on Freesat. We haven't seen an ITV HD broadcast yet in the few hours since installing the Foxsat-HDR but previous broadcasts viewed on the non-PVR version were superb.Freesat was launched in May 2007, allowing viewers to watch digital satellite TV without a subscription. So as a PVR you get to do all the cool things with live TV – pause and rewind within limits, so if you need to answer the phone you can simply pause. If you need to go out to the shops, you might just choose to start recording instead. You also get to change various settings allowing you plenty of control over your recording options. With a reasonably large 320GB of memory, Humax cite 80 hours of HD content or 200 hours of SD content, but the likelihood is that you’ll have a bit of both, with a tendency to hang on to the HD content for longer, because, hey, it’s high definition.

You can navigate the EPG by selecting the genre of your desired programme, which can then be viewed as a table, a list or a schedule of selected shows. You can also find a show by inputting the name. The Humax FOXSAT-HDR also has a Common Interface, which can be used for viewing encrypted channels by using a Conditional Access Module (CAM), with a valid card. No CAM modules are included with this receiver, there are currently no encrypted services listed on the Freesat EPG. The Humax FOXSAT-HDR can record two channels at the same time. You can start watching a programme that is being recorded from its beginning even though the rest of the programme is still being recorded (chase play). So I am inclined to get it working again but wanted some advice about options. I am currently assuming although can't be sure that the PSU is faulty but cannot see obvious signs of damage.The HUMAX doesn't see the Ethernet info via DHCP, I've added the info manually and it doesn't seem to connect. We haven't had time yet to delve into the media file manager (watch out for a more in-depth review appearing here soon) but first impressions of watching and recording with the Foxsat-HDR are excellent. I'm not sure where to go next. Can anyone help? Is this possible, and if so, what am I doing wrong?
