Nikon Speedlight SB-5000 is the first model featuring 2.4GHz radio communication for slave and master mode. It weighs 420g, slightly heavier than the SB-9XX units. The menu system is similar to SB-700 and 9XX series. It uses a dot matrix display with led illumination unlike SB-700 and 9XX series' EL illuminator. The modeling button makes a return. It is slightly more powerful than the previous models however still less powerful than the SB-800. The head contains a fan activated after a short period of use to prevent overheating. This feature promotes more frequent and consecutive flashes without heat issues.

There is almost no audible noise from the inverter as it recycles; just a light noise if you used much power and then it goes silent.

More light flexibility. You can zoom further (to 200mm), the flash correctly sets to the FX or DX angle of view, gels used in the flash will be corrected for in white balance by the latest cameras, but most importantly you can change the "shape" of the light from highly concentrated to evenly distributed (with a setting in between). This is actually the "big" thing. You have to shoot with the different settings to understand just how much we've needed more light modification from flash. Now that we have it, we'll want more. This baloney means that you can set an offset in the zoom head so that it tends to focus the light more tightly towards the center, or spread it out more than usual. Lots of small touches. The flash head rotates the same amount in both directions (finally). The carrying case holds the accessories. A thermal cutout feature keeps you from frying your head (and an indicator shows you how close you are to doing that ;~). The battery compartment door is a little sturdier and less cumbersome to use. The firmware of the flash can be updated. The list is actually relatively long when it comes to small touches than are improvements. If I was a full-time news or event pro, I'd have two SB-5000 because they can belt out the most power and recycle the fastest for heavy use. The SB-5000 also offers a radio slave.

No Film TTL. Most of the old film TTL subtleties are missing, as well. There is no provision for the various balanced fill-flash modes that were the herald of film TTL. They all work with today's F6, which also uses the same i-TTL CLS system as the DSLRs; this line refers to the traditional TTL mode of all other Nikon TTL flash cameras made since the 1980s. It has electronic interfaces for through-the-lens (TTL) automatic exposure and automatic zoom to match lens focal lengths from 17 to 200mm (35mm equivalent) and 12 to 200mm in Nikon DX Format. Over SB-800, SB-900 features: The SB-910's color correction filters are critical to get the color of the flash to match indoor lighting; without these filters, the flash light would look too blue indoors at home or in good restaurants, and too purple under fluorescent lights. Under Auto or Flash White Balance, most Nikons are smart enough to set the WB appropriately when you use the green filter under fluorescent light and the orange filter under normal tungsten and halogen light; there are little tabs on the filters that key a sensor on the flash that talks to your digital camera.
