The EOS Utility is one of the lesser-known highlights of owning a Canon DSLR. With the camera connected to your computer, whether wirelessly or over USB, the EOS Utility lets you remote control pretty much any function or setting of the camera that doesn’t involve turning a physical switch or dial – so you may not be able to remotely change the exposure mode, say from Aperture Priority to Manual, but you can control pretty much anything else. The Canon EOS 200D is an interesting small-scale DSLR, designed for beginners, yet comprehensive enough for photo enthusiasts too. It arrives at a time when mirrorless models - such as Canon's own EOS M6 - are arguably the more prolific cameras to buy, thanks to speedy screen-based or viewfinder-based autofocus. Keeping on the subject of focusing, the Canon EOS 200D presents a fairly basic layout of nine AF points in a diamond formation, with one single cross type in the centre. This arrangement is identical to that of the EOS 100D and presents an AF working range of 0.5EV to 18EV.

Technically speaking, Canon EOS 200D is superior to Canon EOS 2000D, with an overall iCamRank score of 58 and 50, respectively. The Live View button is within easy reach of your right thumb. A grid line display and very useful live histogram can be enabled to help with composition and exposure, and you can zoom in by up to 10x magnification of the image displayed on the LCD screen. Focusing in Live View via a half-press of the shutter release as normal. During Live View recording you can also use the touch-sensitive screen to change AF point, and to fire off the shutter release if you want to. This setup can be particularly useful for macro and still life shoots, where you’re using the camera on a tripod and don’t want to look through the viewfinder.Take complete creative control of your images with PIXMA and imagePROGRAF PRO professional photo printers. It works, but the initial setup is more than a little complicated and while the touch-screen on the 200D / SL2 makes it fairly easy to tap out a caption, I still much prefer sharing images socially with my phone. So if it were me, I’d use the Wifi to simply copy the desired images from the camera onto my phone first, then share from there.

Turning to metering and exposure, this is looked after by a 63-zone dual-layer metering sensor. Exposure can be refined using the exposure-compensation system, which offers 1/3 stop or 1/2 stop increment adjustment over a +/-5EV range. With plenty of detail and nicely controlled noise from its 24-megapixel sensor, image quality was good, too. In fact, it’s on par with cropped-sensor SLRs costing much more. Nikon has a slight advantage for low noise at fast ISO speeds, though. Canon Eos 200D DSLR Camera has extraordinary 24.2-megapixel with 100-25600 auto & 100-25600 in whole stop increments ISO for the rich image with detail & color. It can generate world’s fastest live view focusing with Dual Pixel CMOS AF and portrait photos in shallow depth of field by large APS-C sensor. In addition, it has EF/EF-S lens mount, Red-Eye reduction lamp, built-in flash and rechargeable li-ion battery. There are a number of drive modes available on the Canon EOS 200D / SL2. These include Single Shot, Continuous Shooting, Self-timer and Remote Controlled Shooting. In Continuous Shooting mode, the camera can take pictures at a speed of 5fps for up to an unlimited number Large Fine JPEGs or 6 Raw files. So with a viewfinder that’s limited to a basic 9-point AF system with modest low-light sensitivity and only one cross type sensor, and live view limited by a lower frame rate, the EOS 200D / SL2 isn’t a leader when it comes to action or sports photography. If you want faster burst shooting with continuous autofocus at this price point, you should consider a Sony mirrorless camera like the Alpha A6000. Alternatively if you like the idea of buffering the last second or so of action, allowing you to effectively rewind to capture the perfect moment, then you may enjoy shooting in the 4K Photo modes of a Lumix G mirrorless camera. Those with sharp eyes will also notice a new connectivity button on the top of the camera to the left of the pop-up flash, which can be used to initiate a fast wireless connection. A small green LED blinks to tell you the cameras Wi-Fi is active, which turns constant when a successful connection has been made. The other button you get on the EOS 200D that you won’t find on the EOS 1300D is a depth-of-field preview button below the lens release. In terms of image quality, the EOS 200D's 24 megapixel CMOS sensor produces virtually no visible noise at all from ISO 100 all the way up to ISO 1600, with even the three faster settings of 3200-12800 producing perfectly usable images (although 25600 and 51200 are best reserved for emergency use). All other image quality aspects are up to Canon's usual high standards, so top marks go to the 200D in this department. Even the new Canon EF-S 18-55m f/4-5.6 IS STM kit lens is worth considering if you've not yet bought into the Canon system.

Sample Images

To formally measure the burst shooting speed of the 200D / SL2, I fitted it with a freshly-formatted Lexar Professional 32GB UHS-II 2000x card, rated at 300MB/s, set the shutter to 1/500, the sensitivity to 400 ISO and fired-off a number of tests. The SL2's main competitor is the aforementioned Nikon D3400, which is just a tad larger and heavier. The SL2s' other peers are all mirrorless and include (in our opinion) the Canon EOS M5, Panasonic DMC-GX85 and the Sony a6000 which, after 3+ years on the market, is still competitive.
