It's a shame that the sound isn't quite up to par, but that’s easily solved by hooking up a separate soundbar. We do, at least, like that the content is grouped by genre and that it’s made clear which service they’re on before you select them. A contrast ratio of for example 400:1 means that the blackest black on screen is 400 times darker than the whitest white. In day to day use, we didn't have any issues with the sound system performance with voices sounding clear and distinguishable, with a good stereo soundstage to either side of the set.

We also encountered signs of blooming when bright objects appeared on screen with a darker background, such as subtitles and this was most noticeable with HDR content. Voice control allows you to change channels, adjust the volume, and launch apps using simple voice commands. It has a direct LED backlight with no local dimming and it features HDR10, HDR10+, HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) and Dolby Vision for high dynamic range playback, but this is limited to a measured peak brightness of around 240 nits. Ultra Smooth Motion and Clear motion were also switched off and the Local Dimming was left at default in Cinema Night mode. Smart TV is provided by the company’s own VIDAA U4 system and we found it very easy to use and responsive.That’s combined with Hi-View Engine which uses AI to enhance the image and HDR support to boost contrast. Assembly is easy and, like before, there’s a cable clutter system to route cables through the protruding ‘feet’ of the stand for a tidier area. There’s too much bleed from the LED lighting and inconsistency across the panel to get those dramatic low-lights and the intensity dips further when viewed from even slightly off-axis.

We found panel uniformity to be decent with some darker corners and outer edges and a slightly brighter centre when showing a 100% brightness field and a darker centre and lighter edges on a 5% field. As most streaming services now provide DV content as well as a growing catalogue of UHD Blu-rays, you should be able to get the best out of the U7QF. This means that the U7QF should be able to handle any currently available HDR format used in broadcast, streaming or disc formats. It did go slightly higher than this at 25 and 50% window sizes before rounding off at 551 nits on a full field. The 55A7GQ’s limited brightness levels would limit its abilities with HDR images even if its black levels were decent.Image accuracy is also very good with excellent calibrated images and decent HDR performance thanks to Dolby Vision dynamic metadata. The TV also features a game mode that optimizes the settings for a more immersive gaming experience. Not only can you use this to control the TV but like a standard smart speaker, you can get answers to your questions and it’ll work with the rest of your smart home as well. As the camera spins around Voldemort’s army amassing on a hill above Hogwarts at night in the final Harry Potter film, you’d be forgiven for thinking the Dark Lord had turned up by himself, so hard is it to make out anything else amid the unwanted greyness the 55A7GQ generates around him.
