What I didn't quite enjoy were things like the absence of Marcus Valerius and the Therion Cohort for most of the book. I'd like to thank Gav Thorpe for yet again delivering one of the most entertaining and unusual stories published by the Black Library so far. It's really a minor quibble, though, so overall I think the book holds up very well on its own merits. The intrigue part is pretty good and actually this is as much an Alpha Legion book as it is a Raven Guard book. He receives intelligence from one of the undercover Alpha Legionnaires about the Primarch Project and begins preparations to use the tech-guild forces as a distraction to steal the gene-technology.

It's a well traveled tale, starting in Istvaan, moving to Terra and finally to the Raven Guard's world of Deliverance. This book made me think about my own loses in my life and how others have reacted and how I have dealt with it. There’s more than enough anger, revenge betrayal and honour going on in there to hook you and keep you turning the pages, and it ends on the same kind of note as the “Let’s hunt some orc” scene from the Fellowship of the Ring. It's known as the Corvus suit and the beaked helmet is an Imperial in-joke that the Primarch appreciates, even if his men don't. Corax is deeply disturbed by what he and his Legion went through but throughout the book he is a very uneven character.

There's lots going on, I loved the dialogue, it's just a good solid book without Remembrancers and it's infinitely more relevant than the TWO Dark Angels books (come on, where are the World Eaters and Blood Angels?
