When Alexievich first tried to publish her magnificent book The Unwomanly Face of War, a Soviet censor told her: “We don’t need your little history. We need the big history.” Many years later, Alexievich’s record triumphed, and now Ernaux’s Nobel puts the nail in the coffin of that censor and his partners in thought: we all need little histories. They’re what literature is made of.

He climbed to a middle-management position and then bought his café-grocer’s shop in a small town. All his life, he struggled with money, to pay for the shop, to keep it afloat, always scraping by and worrying about money. Threaded through the text are not only milestones (the end of the war, the birth of the computer, the mobile phone) but things society doesn’t know, or doesn’t say, at the time. She feels she missed out on the civil unrest of May 1968 – she was “too settled” at the time – but is perhaps still a product of it. This sense of being adjacent yet subject to the great sweep of time is The Years’ great, humble achievement. J'ai un peu de colère ce matin, un peu d'indignation : je viens de lire La Place. That is a good question. The theme is common in books written by children of immigrants. An author who comes to mind is Richard Rodriguez, who is Mexican-American and gay, and writes about the way his education alienated him from his parents and culture in Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez (1982) and Days of Obligation: An Argument With My Mexican Father (1992) He would be honored by her book about him, I think, but also he'd make fun of her seriousness, including some of the (very few) observations of an educated daughter, though she is careful to honor him though her use of language. She uses words to create a man, her father, though they are not quite his words. That’s by the by, really. I think she’s such an impressive writer – her prose is so deceptively simple yet conveys so much, and in short books.
