In addition to the motif of decay under a veneer of prosperity, something that the comic is obviously going to focus on is race. Richard was with Sam, and Queenie gave evidence that she was headed out of town with the cash during Helen's murder. The opening’s brutality is visceral, as Slam’s narration about how he mostly just took whatever path in life was simplest is contrasted with bloodshed and violence.

It's great that the author includes a warning textbox to prepare everyone for the horrendous things going on in this comic. The writing here is fantastic and a must-read for fans of classic mystery and gritty noir as King once again knocks it out of the park! The last issue ended with Slam charging into Wayne Manor after learning that Constance was the one who took the baby from Richard’s hideout and buried her in the backyard. It was the kind of assignment that would send plenty of reviewers scrambling to give their two cents before they could even muster up a penny.

It manages to tie up all the loose ends, meaningfully place a thematic poignancy on the characters' actions, and remain tense and exciting through to the end. Taking place two generations before Batman, private investigator Slam Bradley gets tangled in the headline-grabbing “kidnapping of the century” as the infant Wayne heir Helen disappears in the night…and so begins a brutal, hard-boiled, epic tale of a man living on the edge and a city about to burn. Gotham City: Year One is a noir mystery in which the Wayne family are the prime suspects in their daughter Helen's disappearance. Dual themes of moral decay and racial prejudice create a complex narrative that hopefully future issues will be able to successfully execute on.As the world falls apart around him, Slam must decide between justice and revenge—a choice that will echo down the generations and redefine both Gotham and Batman! Esse quadrinho me fez ficar grudado nele até eu entender todos os mistérios que ele estabelece e desbarata até a última página, mas também acaba deixando alguns na incumbência do leitor.
