The lens focuses quickly and quietly, and the focus ring felt nice when manual focus was desired or necessary, such as when shooting at night. Contemporary is a crop-sensor lens, sold in both Sony APS-C E-mount and Micro Four Thirds varieties.

One exception could be macro photography, where small manual adjustments to the point of focus can be useful. When I’ve asked other photographers, they usually shrug their shoulders and admit they haven’t got a clue. This is a good “standard” walkaround length for typical subjects such as landscape and even street photography work. In the shot below, we can see that even a background that was quite close to the subject can be blurred a bit.APS-C X3 direct image sensor captures all primary RGB colors at each and every pixel location, ensuring the capture of full and complete color. As for the lens hood, the Sigma lens comes bundled with the plastic petal-shaped LH716-01 hood whereas the round LH-48B hood for the 17mm must be bought separately in most cases.

However, we have developed our own proprietary MTF measuring system (A1)* using 46-megapixel Foveon direct image sensors. SIGMA fp L , SIGMA fp, Panasonic Lumix S1, Lumix S1R, Lumix S1H, Lumix S5, Lumix BS1H, Leica SL2, SL2-S are supported. The focus ring is fly-by-wire and turns continuously, responding to the speed at which you rotate the ring. SIGMA lenses with “DN” in the name are designed for optimal performance on cameras with a short flange back distance.Although the lens allows focus bracketing on my older camera (Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II), on my new one (an OM-1), in-camera focus stacking with this or other third-party lenses is not supported. This lens effectively minimizes optical aberrations and offers superb resolution at wide-open aperture and throughout the aperture range. But if you shoot a lot of handheld video, it's best to pair it with a body with sensor-based stabilization. It’s just as sharp, has rediculous autofocus (OEM Sony lens, of course) and features incredible G-series build quality. You perhaps won’t get the ridiculous AF speed and accuracy of an OEM Sony lens, but I’ve found you can get pretty close.

It makes perfect sense because SIGMA cameras equipped with the FOVEON sensor are extremely “tough” on lenses and they mercilessly use the same sensor for their lens testers. This X mount version has a field of view equivalent to a 24mm lens on full frame, due to Fujifilm’s X system cameras having APS-C size sensors. With some small nitpicks aside, including a poorly-designed lens hood and some issues with aberrations and flare, the lens is very good. The fly-by-wire focus ring of the 17mm is also ridged but because it is so much smaller, it isn’t quite as easy to manipulate. In April 2023, Sigma announced it would be making three of its “Contemporary” prime lenses available for the Nikon Z mount – the first Sigma lenses to do this. As a fan of manual focus, it would be nice to have that on the lens itself to switch quickly, but I ended up just rebinding a custom button on the camera body for it instead.

The images from it across the range of apertures are usable, but there is a substantial difference in sharpness across that range, and I had hoped that wide open, it would have been sharper. The large focus ring has a rubberized finish and feels very nice to use, plus it's wide at just under a couple inches (around 50 millimeters). Art lens for full-frame DSLRs weighs in at nearly a kilogram, its ‘Contemporary’ lenses are built to a more space-saving, lightweight ethos.

First off, Sony actually recently released their own direct competitor to this lens: the Sony E 15mm F1. Vignetting is something of a non-issue, given that Fujifilm’s in-camera correction produces images with virtually none.
