This starts off with a very good intro introduction to death in general and forensic anthropology in particular. Fearless, except for rodent, I so enjoyed my time listening to Sue Black narrate her book All that Remains.

All That Remains, A Renowned Forensic Scientist on Death, Mortality, and Solving Crimes’ by Sue Black is a fascinating autobiographical memoir. Looking back on this immensely challenging but vitally important work, Black says it was “an experience I would not trade for the world”.

She was the lead anthropologist for the British Forensic Team's work in the war crimes investigations in Kosovo and one of the first forensic scientists to travel to Thailand following the Indian Ocean tsunami to provide assistance in identifying the dead.

Sue talks about her early life in Inverness and Dundee and what sparked her interest in getting into the field of forensic anthropology and anatomy.Yet Black’s utterly gripping account of her life and career as a professor of anatomy and forensic anthropology manages to be surprisingly life-affirming. I like the way she thinks, love her humor and am amazed at her tolerance for incredibly trying situations. Scottish Forensic Anthropologist and Professor Sue Black’s memoir about her life confronting death won the Saltire Book of the Year in 2018.

Although her job is difficult, she is aware of the great honour and responsibility it entails to the family members of the missing person.Sue is a familiar face in the media, where documentaries have been filmed about her work, and she led the highly successful BBC 2 series History Cold Case. From the beginning it's clear that Black is not a forensic pathologist, determining causes of death via autopsy, nor an overly science-y person all together.

The book explores aspects of the author's life - part biographic and part recounting of significant cases she has dealt with. As a Professor of Anatomy and Forensic Anthropology, she focuses on mortal remains in her lab, at burial sites, at scenes of violence, murder and criminal dismemberment, and when investigating mass fatalities due to war, accident or natural disaster. It also goes into detail about various interesting cases the author has been directly involved with, and how forensics have helped to build a case or resolve a mystery surrounding an individual’s death or that of a major disaster. The thought that each and every human being on this planet is leading their own life which is unique and distinct from all others is an unfathomable idea and yet so fascinating.This book expands on much of what was in that interview, as well as adding more details about her life, work, and the cases in which she's been involved. She gives us some backstory as to how she became interested in studying the anatomy of the deceased and also personal stories about deaths occurring in her family. She uses key cases to reveal how forensic science has developed and what her work has taught her about human nature.
