There’s a more prominent rumble now, which flowed through the velour earpads and slathered the outside of my ears with vibrations. Well they sort of state that it's a new design, but I'm betting that's a bit of poetic license—the HD 700 is a relatively new design. It can also give instruments like piano, but especially brass instruments, an added ‘honk’ to their sound. Via EQ, it is very easy to adjust for that elevation at 150hz, but it is not really possible to alleviate the lack of extension as the bass starts to distort early when pushed, so I only add a very conservative 2dB shelf under 100hz.HD650 has stronger bass extension and a little more midbass as well, but also provides more presence in the upper mids and treble. However, the carrying pouch ultimately seems a little more appropriate for a headphone like the 660; as I’ve already mentioned, the 660S/S2 are closer to being a high quality everyday-use pair of headphones than an ultra-premium pair to be locked away in a protective case. If you look around on the web about HD 660S information, you’ll no doubt run into Jude’s post on Head-Fi where he shows the HD660 S driver compared to the one of the Sennheiser HD700.

Some will say the HD 650 has more mid-bass bloom, which it does, but it amounts to the same thing relatively speaking. Chris Martin’s vocals are clear, but slightly nasally (not sure if I can blame the headphones for that), while the guitar, synth, and drums that file in are layered nicely. The response throughout the range is very even and flat, but consistently over out neutral target by about 3dB. They have a much better passive soundstage performance and more neutral bass and treble responses, which some may prefer.

We also see a change in impedance: the HD 660S2 comes in at 300 ohms, while the impedance of the S1 is 150 ohms. While the imaging does provide generally excellent positioning and weight, it doesn’t feel fully three dimensional and doesn’t strongly present the center of the stereo image in front of the listener. It’s an approach that doesn’t seem out of place with classic hi-fi, either, as that’s exactly what Sennheiser has done with its latest headphones, the HD 660 S. Cue up Maurizio’s M4, or Appleblim and Peverelist’s Circling, for instance, and where the driving sub-bass retreats to the background on the HD580 Precision, the HD 660 S whip up a head-nodding barrage with zero effort.
