Brad Meltzer’s latest novel takes a break from the author’s bestselling Beecher White series and introduces readers to a new character named Hazel Nash. Anuj Kumar of The Hindu wrote: "What makes the series convincing is the way it captures the inability of the experts in different fields to answer all the questions, and how the case impacted the lives of journalists who covered it, as well as the policemen and forensic experts who investigated it. Whatever they say solves a part of the jigsaw puzzle, but could not complete the picture, because ultimately there is no clear consensus even on whether it was a crime story." [13] Bonus: If you’ve read Meltzer’s Beecher White series, you’ll recognize a character who makes a small cameo in The Hosue of Secrets. It’s pretty awesome! Lowell Cauffiel does an excellent job putting this chaotic mess together. There are retractions, lies within lies, minds shattered by ritual abuse and the most vile man at the center. I'm not going to lie. This kinda reads like a Dan Brown adventure, but with a female main character. There is even the creepy guy lurking around the world.

Hazel is an interesting character, and I did really like her. There are big gaps in her memory, which is part of her own personal mystery to solve. She's complex, and not all sunshine and roses. Too many sentences like those above. So much repetition of information. Needless tense changes. I think the author is pumping out too much too fast. (Eye-catching title...mysterious cover image...fit to print.) Starting fresh with a new #1 (October 1996), this series ran 25 issues, plus a two-part special House of Secrets: Facade. This House of Secrets series was creator-owned, except for its title which was "licensed" by DC to the series' creators. The letters column in issue #6 indicates that, for legal reasons, they could not include Cain and Abel in the stories.
