Denibbing is a really important step in applying any finish, it helps either the adhesion or absorption of further coats and can make a real difference to your projects. Denibbing Video Transcript If the worktop has a heavy coating of an old wax or oil, you'll need to sand this off first. Use our Sanding Pads to do this. Once the surface has been prepared it is time to apply the Worktop Oil. The same instructions apply to all wooden worktops; simply follow the instructions above for 'oiling new wooden worktops'. Worktop Cleaning & Maintenance When the surface is reasonably even in colour and touch (it should feel smooth and look lighter), you can move on to step two. First, wipe the surface down with a damp cloth to remove any dust. Optional Step – Staining

Apply the first coat of Danish Oil with a Foam Brush, wiping the oil onto the surface of the wood, following the direction of the grain. This is the fun part, and where you see the greatest transformation. Pour the Wood Stain into a bowl and dip in the Foam Brush. Following the direction of the grain wipe the stain onto the wood, and then leave to soak in for a couple of minutes. Wipe off any excess stain using a Lint Free Cloth. Shake the Danish Oil well, before use. If you are unsure of the finish, test it on spare wood, or an unseen area first.

How to Oil a Worktop

The fine grit lightly smooths (de-nibs) microscopic "nibs" or "bumps" that can occur in-between varnish coats from settled, trapped dust. With a specially woven structure that tends to resist clogging from wood particles, these pads can be used dry or wet for the removal of surface impurities from wood and furniture including dirt and oxides.

Like with any wood restoration task, the more effort you put into the preparation, the better the result. In this case, it is sanding and cleaning the wood. Sanding removes the old finish, and cleaning helps removing any staining from the wood and also removes any dirt that would effect the finish. Enhance the natural grain of the wood. Wooden kitchen worktops are not cheap, and you will want an oil that enhances the natural beauty of the wood, by adding warmth and depth to the overall look. To maintain the fine quality of your wooden worktop, it is essential that it is oiled regularly. The worktop is fully protected and in good condition when the surface has a slight sheen to it and water ‘beads’ or forms droplets on the surface. With use, the finish will slowly wear off, and water will no longer 'bead' on the surface, the sheen will also look duller. Before applying the Danish Oil, it is important to properly clean the wood and remove any old finishes. This will ensure the oil is fully absorbed, creating an even and an attractive, natural, satin finish.

Use the Wood Cleaner in an undiluted state to deep clean the surface; simply apply the Wood Cleaner to a clean cloth and rub into the wood, applying pressure. After cleaning, wipe any cleaner off with a clean, dry cloth and leave to dry. Leave the oil to penetrate for two to three minutes and wipe away any excess oil with a Lint Free Cloth. We recommend using a Lint Free Cloth as it will not spoil the application of the oil by leaving any unwanted loose fibres, thread and lint on the surface.
