This book is not for the faint of heart - and unfortunately, it has gotten some bad wrap from some Tiktokers who did not research the book before reading. This is a hardcore gore book with very triggering topics. The narrator hired for the novel was honestly the highlight. Likewise the children in the book are written pretty accurately to their ages. I think those two things are about all the positive things I can say about it though. This is a tremendous work of historical noir… The mastery of silent film history was also exceptional… Expertly written and plotted, this excellent novel is a deeply satisfying amalgam of mystery and horror.” A blend of murder, noir, and horror set against a fascinating time-trip through Hollywood. The Devil’s Playground is totally engaging.” I felt like there was a decent plot in here . . . somewhere under all the density and excessive descriptions of everything, but it was just too much work to get to it under and around all the padding.The story is revealed in split time frames. In 1927 Mary Rourke is the movie industry fixer hiding scandal. In the beginning I didn’t think that this book was going to work for me, but once the storyline opened up it reeled me in slowly. It’s not a fast paced read despite the action element.

Geraldine and Fuchs are character's that are completely evil and unlikable, disgusting in all their enjoyment they have in living out their dream of watching the suffering of the children. There is a reason Geraldine is doing what she is, and it is somewhat sad, but clearly not justifiable. As a much younger man, I could find myself enjoying hardcore gore just for the sake of hardcore gore. Storyline is for the weak.
