Despite their clandestine nature, Pathfinders don’t take to the field unsupported – specialist equipment gives them access to detailed sensor data from orbit, marking critical targets while the T’au remain safely behind cover. Tac op 2: Patient Hunter – If more than half of your team is concealed and you score more primary mission VP, you can score this. I’ve often found this to be too hard. When your team is 7w 5+sv, it’s hard to actually stay concealed on open boards, while somehow winning on primary missions more than 1 turn. I’ve generally skipped this. The Pathfinder Kill Teams are the embodiment of that philosophy of war, with their many specialists and tools for any situation, as well as their all-round excellent ranged weaponry. In today’s Kill Team Focus, we’re looking at how your T’au will fare in the new game of skirmish battles, with a look at why you might want to play them, the units they can use, and the Tactics they can try.

You can also layer your defence, making sure the enemy has to go through the bravest of your operatives before they can get to the heart of your team. Be mindful of enemy charge distances, and use Photon Grenades, the TRANSPECTRAL INTERFERENCE PATHFINDER and the Grav-inhibitor Drone to slow the enemy down and protect your lines of defence. This can effectively stall your enemy and keep them away from your key operatives. For the metal in this step I use Agrax Earthshade to give the metal a dirty quality and then go over it again with Nuln Oil to draw out the recesses. I then put a bit of Typhus Corrosion on a small sized makeup brush, wipe off the excess, and gently stipple it sparingly on the metal. I find this gives a really nice grungy look, the most obvious place for this is on the shoulder armor.

Synergy: The real key to the list (and I think any Tau list) is you have to play your units together and to support each other. Your movement phase is critical. It is often desirable to ready, but make sure you’re in a safe position to do so. You should be mostly concerned with where your models are positioned relative to each other, to support each other, and to the opponent, to deny your opponent an optimal route to the gunners and try to funnel them such that they must eat several turns of shooting to get at you. Pathfinder Kill Teams are made up of one Pathfinder Shas’Ui and 11 operatives chosen from the following list: In the close confines of Kill Team, the pulse blasters wielded by these warriors are powerful indeed.

The standard operative, with markerlights and a pulse carbine. Surprisingly, having access to more markerlights and mission action doers is good in more than one match up. There are also times when you just need more opportunities and angles to put markerlights on opposing operatives, so don’t sleep on the standard shas’la. Blooded Pathfinder Marksman Pathfinders give you an additional rail rifle; they come with a special Marksman Rail Rifle that hits on a 3+ and can either fire the standard rounds or Dart Rounds, which trade Lethal 5+ for Silent, turning them into deadly snipers. Their Inertial Dampener ability lets them make Overwatch shots at full BS. Awards you a Victory Point at the end of every Turning Point where at least half of the enemy operatives in killzone have one or more Markerlights on them. Patient Hunter

Strengths

As long as your leader is still on the field, during the strategic phase you can call for an Art of War when you would use a strategic ploy. Instead of selecting a SHAS’LA operative for a FIRE WARRIOR or PATHFINDER fire team, you can select one DRONE operative from the list below. Instead of selecting a STEALTH BATTLESUIT SHAS’UI operative for a STEALTH BATTLESUIT fire team, you can select two DRONE operatives from the list below. Each DRONE operative still counts as one selection for a FIRE WARRIOR or PATHFINDER fire team, and every two DRONE operatives count as one selection for a STEALTH BATTLESUIT fire team. The total number of DRONE operatives in that fire team cannot exceed the total number of other operatives in that fire team.

An important note about ceaseless and overwatch against 7w, 5+ save models: The Ceaseless abilty on the gun means you’ll normally end up chipping in 3-4 damage. Mv1 Gun Drone Pathfinders are some of the bravest warriors in the T’au Empire, pushing forward beyond positions of safety to take key ground for the Greater Good. With lots of operatives, Pathfinders can be great for this in Kill Team, giving you board control and objective dominance. A drone with a 4+ invulnerable save, and a 5+ feel no pain on top of that. This drone basically functions as a secondary medic in the shooting horde match ups, and as a hilarious way to tie up models with medium-to-poor melee skill. Try charging into a 3A WS 4+ model and watch it flail against your feel no pains for multiple turning points. Mv7 Marker DroneThis is your Leader, so you have to bring him in your Kill Team, but he’s also a decent fighter with a 3+ Ballistic Skill and a Bonding Knife that’s actually not a terrible melee weapon, which is a big deal in a Pathfinder Kill Team. He is also responsible for declaring Arts of War (see above), and has the Holographic Readout ability which lets him give a nearby non-Drone friendly operative a -1 to Action Point cost for performing a mission action once per battle. Shas’la Pathfinder (12 allowed per Kill Team) The Pathfinder Kill Team is a Kill Team for the Games Workshop skirmish tabletop game Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team, and it is available in the Kill Team: Chalnath box set.

The big boy drone with all the fun abilities. This drone has 12 wounds, a heavy gun, and of course the Analyse (1 AP) action . Additionally as a little bonus, it gives you a Recon selection during scouting phase in addition to your actual scouting choice, which is one way you can guarantee the extra dash move for your Grenadier in the scenario we mentioned above.

One year in we’ve seen several kill teams from the Compendium be replaced by teams in White Dwarf and other releases, though some Compendium teams are still out there and active. Among these are the Huntre Cadre, the T’au empire kill team from the Compendium. While another T’au kill team released in Chalnath last year – the Pathfinder kill team, the Huntre Cadre has some key differences in that it allows a greater variety of units, giving access to fire warriors and stealth suits. Hunter Cadre Kill Teams This Tactic enables you to field only one or two markerlights in your kill team and still generate a lot of markerlight counters on one target each turn (which you can then shoot to pieces). Some players even use this Tactic every battle round!
