This is a very fine book about the travels of a ship and the people who were on it, and if that's what you're looking for, you've found it. Nevertheless, this is a must read for anyone interested in British Naval history, The Franklin Expedition, Artic exploration, or Canadian history. HMS Erebus was one of the great exploring ships, a veteran of groundbreaking expeditions to the ends of the Earth.

We learn of the brave man who was so maligned when, having discovered, through the Innuit, the likely fate of the two ships and their crews, he was shunned for suggesting that any Englishman could be so depraved as to resort to cannibalism. His moving account of the discovery of abandoned items, taken on board as comforts of home by the officers – silver cutlery with their initials indented, scattered on a frozen shore – affected me the most. In the early years of Queen Victoria's reign, HMS Erebus undertook two of the most ambitious naval expeditions of all time. I'm sure it was, he's a smart dude, but this book's authorship didn't feel like it played to his strengths.The sternboard manoeuvre that Ross and his crew executed in the most dire and dangerous situation would have been a great gamble at any time. The last chapter of Erebus covers the recent resurgence in the Franklin mystery, and ends with Palin’s visit to Antarctica in 2017, to see the final places along the parties’ sojourn across the ice.
