It probably sounds like an attractive option right now, but I have to say, as somebody who has a 105 groupset, I won't be upgrading my components to Ultegra or Dura-Ace. I don't feel the need - the 105 groupset is fantastic and relatively budget-friendly. I replaced the long cage Tiagra 4700 with a shortcage, and went for the 105 10 speed (5700) which you would think would be a straight swap... It's not. Tiagra is a really impressive groupset. To get this level of performance, finish and attention to detail on such an affordable groupset is hugely impressive.

The Tiagra 4700 groupset is older and due an update, in which case it may become more attractive. The front derailleur is a different design which still works well, and the crankset is significantly heavier (though heavy cranksets are often specced on 105 bikes). In addition, the caliper braking is weaker. However, as the hydraulic brake performance is very similar between all the groupsets, hydraulic Tiagra is a more appealing prospect than its caliper counterpart. speed chain HG601 (‘105’) and HG701 (‘Ultegra’) weigh 257g. Both compared to cheaper chains claim Teflon roller link plate treatment, but the HG701 adds it on the pin link plate as well. The HG901 chain is 247g thanks to hollow pins. There’s also Teflon on the rollers.

Road 2x 43.5mm quoted, which means approximately 46.0mm for the outer and approx. 41mm for the inner Whereas Tiagra is compatible with a 10-speed system. The large chainring is good for teeth between 46 and 52. no offence, but it was obvious fact since the 47.. came out, that it uses a different actuation ratio as that of older 10 spd components.

The Tourney front derailleur design is again an older one, similar to previous generations of Claris, and distinct from the others. A key difference between 105 and Tiagra is that the 105 is intended for 11-speed and the large chainring has teeth between 46 and 53. You do get an option with both 105 and Tiagra rear derailleurs for whether you want a short or long cage version. These will be used with different cassettes. Those looking for something sub compact double chainset, the FSA Omega Adventurer range has 48/32 46/30 also 50/34. It's not as simple as upgrading your Tiagra groupset components one at a time. This serves to keep the weight down but the strength and stiffness high. I'm not sure. I've bodged plenty things to an adequate standard before - if you're buying relatively expensive new kit it's nice if it works sweetly! Keep the mech but change the cassette (and chain) for 11spd items? Ultegra & 105 are not lighter, but they are better using ‘SLR EV’ design. The Dura-Ace brakes shave about 30–40 grams off using ‘unobtainium’ parts. Tiagra offers excellent value for money but 105 is certainly the better groupset and we’d recommend going for it if your funds allow because of the better brakes, the small weight saving and the upgrade to 11-speed.

If you need to make adjustments, on both levers this can be done using a screw-operated system. This is especially useful for those with a shorter reach or smaller hands are you are then able to move the levers to be closer to you.Nobody needs 11t, who is not racing. And 2t jumps are just incredibly annoying, making it impossible to keep a comfortable cadence.

I spend most of my time in the large cog but when it gets steep and the load heavy, I drop down to the small chaniring and breathe a sigh of relief. Tiagra is the highest-grade Shimano groupset that still offers a triple chainset for fans of super-wide-range gear systems The Sora & Claris groupsets are not that much different from higher end groupsets, although they use generally lower grade materials. Sora is more-or-less ‘9-speed Claris’, so Claris has definite appeal in that this is ‘enough groupset’, whereas even lower grade groupsets may fall short. The main way Shimano differentiates Claris is with its very heavy outer chainring.The Tiagra brakes are impressive too. They don't fail to offer the stopping power riders want (and need). As both are Shimano parts, swapping them out can be done easily. Both chainsets use a 110mm bolt circle diameter. The Claris, Sora, and Tiagra cassettes are basic designs made of steel. All three use Shimano’s Hyperglide system.
