The rest of the disc’s bonus material is more in-depth details about topics and ideas discussed in the audio commentaries. Given Tippett’s track record providing stop motion animation for the likes of RoboCop, Starship Troopers and the original Star Wars trilogy there was little doubt it would be a technical tour de force. There’s also a piece on the collaboration between the project and Academy of Art University, a moody behind-the-scenes montage, and a gallery of behind-the-scenes images. There are some human actors to be seen, most notably mad director Alex Cox ( Repo Man, Tombstone Rashomon), but they are few and very far between. Decades after the success of Tippett Studio forced production into stasis, a group of animators at Tippett Studio came upon boxes of shelved props and puppets.

This two-disc set ships in Steelbook packaging with terrific cover art, an inner print, and a promotional insert. We follow a protagonist whom we know nothing about, be it their name, source, or destination, other than they have descended from somewhere above and appear to be heading down no matter what atrocities scamper across their path.

And these things that scamper, or wail, or lurk, they often defy description or logic, plucked from Tippett’s mind and presented on screen with great care and detail – often, in fact, far more than would have been requested. There’s a brief feature focusing on the students with the Academy of Art University and how some of the pupils came aboard Mad God . Composed of previously seen segments financed by crowdfunding linked by new footage Mad God does indeed live up to expectations on a technical level. Featuring a dialogue-free run time, abstract and on-the-nose concepts, and grotesque imagery, it’s a hard sell.

Shadows are deep, but lots of atmospherics have been employed here, so don’t expect too much detail in the depths. However, back home, when he wasn’t working, he kept tinkering with this personal project, and gradually more and more people joined him to help out, and some thirty years after it began, Mad God finally saw the light of day, and I’m thrilled that it has. I can’t imagine anyone better equipped to dive into this project than Del Toro, and he certainly doesn’t disappoint.There’s no Digital copy, but both discs come in lovely Steelbook packaging with the Assassin character on the cover.

Shudder’s Blu-ray release is a 2-disc set with the film in 1080p HD on Blu-ray and also SD on a regular DVD. Each feature gets into Tippett’s fascinating mind, finding an artist more thoughtful and introspective than one might assume. Phil produced dozens of environments and hundreds of puppets for the project, filling notebook after notebook with thousands of detailed sketches and storyboards.Think Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland meets Stan Brakhage’s The Act of Seeing with One’s Own Eyes, but thirty years in the making.
