A bit pulpy, maybe, and not the last word in characterization, but the story is good enough on its own merits that something more involving could have resulted ... From here, identities blur together and you have no choice as a reader but to hold on tight and ride the waves.

Typical of Japanese crime fiction, particularly the historical kind, it was slow burn with the characters and plot being built up in a very intriguing way. The culture of the country itself also finds a place as does in this particular book, the yakuza or mob and the tattoo craze which flourishes despite being deemed illegal at the time. Uh .... indeed; this contrivance was already a tired one when Takagi was writing this, in 1948, and should have long before been removed from the mystery-writer-toolbox. Out is a must-read Japanese novel, full stop, but especially for fans of the best Japanese mystery novels. What makes this book stand out in a sea of Japanese mystery novels is the fact that Nonoguchi, very early, confesses to the murder — just as Kaga suspects — but that’s just the beginning. Masako Togawa’s other mystery novel available in English is The Lady Killer. The sex, also, seemed rather explicit for 1948. But the clothing, food, the general devastation and loss in Japan feels right. I could almost feel the swirling, colorful kimonos and taste the various forms of rice, seaweed, sake, green tea, and more. In the sense that locale, period particulars and art direction in general would certainly be main attractions for this kind of novel, what's missing amounts to the donut and what's present is the hole.
