By default, there is no always-responsive instant manual-focus override as we take for granted in our DSLRs. However, these lenses are designed for pros, and as such they tend to come with hefty pro-level price tags. If you're looking for something a little more budget-friendly, 70-200mm f/4 lenses can also be a good choice. They have the advantage of being lighter to carry, so can be a great choice for keeping your kit relatively lightweight and mobile. Some 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses, as we'll see, are seriously hefty bits of kit!

IS does nothing if you're shooting moving kids and sports. It does everything if you're shooting still subjects in dim light without a tripod. I prefer the latter, so I love IS and would want one of the IS lenses. Keep shooting hand held even when light gets low. A fast f/2.8 aperture lets in twice as much light as an f/4 lens, and a 3.5-stop Image Stabilizer guards against camera shake

This 70-200 FL is a huge improvement over the old 70-200/2.8 VR II from 2009 because it weighs less and focuses much closer. While the rated close-focus distances aren't that much different, older 70-200s cheated and didn't really go to 200mm at close distances. This new FL lens really is 200mm at close distances. Since this new 70-200 FL doesn't cheat on 200mm, it gets what seems like twice as close when you need it.

With a 9-bladed rounded diaphragm, I get pretty good 18-pointed sunstars on brilliant points of light at the smallest apertures. If this 1,200×900 pixel crop is about 12" (30cm) wide on your screen, the complete image would print at a mammoth 55×82½″ (1.4×2.1 meters) at this same extremely high magnification! It has no rubber gasket on the lens mount like the 17-40mm L and 16-35mm L have to keep blowing crud out of your camera. I see no additional improvement with the EOS R5 and its in-body stabilization with firmware 1.1.0; I get the same results on my EOS RP.This is the lens to get for daylight use where you want the lightest, least expensive tele zoom yet still want a fast and excellent lens. It is ideal for daytime sports because of its very fast focusing and great image quality. You don't need IS and don't need f/2.8 for action in daytime. Personally I'm addicted to IS for hand-held shots of still subjects in any light, so I bought the 70-200mm f/4 L IS version for myself. The Sigma measures 8.1 by 3.6 inches (HD), weighs about 2.9 pounds, and uses 77mm front filters. It's about the same size as the internally zooming Sony 70-200mm F2.8 GM II (7.9 by 3.5 inches, 2.3 pounds) and Panasonic Lumix 70-200mm F2.8 S Pro (8.2 by 3.7, 3.5 pounds), but it splits the weight difference. (Credit: Jim Fisher) Images from this RF lens are beautiful, with plenty of 'pop' and three-dimensionality, and the sharpness gives real bite to the resolution across the entire frame. This is an even bigger deal when you're shooting on the hi-res bodies such as the Canon EOS R5, as weaknesses in the glass are exposed by its 45MP sensor (especially in the corners and edges, where softness and muddiness generally hide).

Take complete creative control of your images with PIXMA and imagePROGRAF PRO professional photo printers. Other than the diaphragm staying at f/2.8, exposure, autofocus, metering and VR work fine other digital cameras. On my Nikon F6 it only shoots at f/2.8 and everything else is perfect. The 2.5m-∞ position prevents the lens from autofocusing closer than 2.5 meters (8 feet). Use this setting only if you're having a problem with the lens attempting to focus on irrelevant close items, or if for some reason the lens is "hunting" from near to far looking for distant subjects. Optically, this lens is about the same as the 70-200mm f/4L IS, which is excellent, but not as over-the-top perfect as the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II. In each performance aspect, this non-IS lens is almost, but not quite as good as the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II. Most people would never notice, so if money matters, get this original non-IS lens. If you need the best regardless of cost, pay twice as much for the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II, which also gets you slightly faster autofocus and Image Stabilization.The zoom ring can be moved with one fingertip, but it takes some effort. It works better with two fingers or your whole hand. The zoom feels as if it's working through a geartrain! My Canon 5D Mark II (as of firmware 2.0.4) doesn't have the data to correct this automatically in its Peripheral Illumination Correction menu option. If you go find the data and load it into your camera (I'm too lazy), it should correct for this automatically. For less money, the B+W 67mm 010 is an excellent filter, as are the multicoated version and the basic multicoated Hoya filters, but the Hoya HD3 is the toughest and the best. Even wide open here at f/2.8, it's still very sharp. Of course nothing is in focus at f/2.8 this close except for a vapor-thin plane that intersects some of the watch trim as shown above. For normal, three dimensional subjects, like people, it's very sharp, and you'd never notice a problem. Here's an example: Filters last a lifetime, so you may as well get the best.
