The Quiet Earth is a 1985 New Zealand post-apocalyptic science fiction film directed by Geoff Murphy and starring Bruno Lawrence, Alison Routledge and Peter Smith as three survivors of a cataclysmic disaster. It is loosely based on the 1981 science fiction novel of the same name by Craig Harrison. [2] [3] Other sources of inspiration have been suggested: the 1954 novel I Am Legend, Dawn of the Dead, and especially the 1959 film The World, the Flesh and the Devil, of which it has been called an unofficial remake. [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] Plot [ edit ] This is where the proverbial hits the fan, the mountains move as Hung changes the battery on his sensor, and it starts transmitting all the data, ‘unusual activity’. The mountains split and so does the ground, as the town is split asunder by the forces of nature. Stunts and effects are the nature of the film from now on as they all work to save the bridge and tunnel and the town and all those lives. Lots of subterranean action in this all out disaster movie. Walter Goodman of The New York Times wrote, "...it's easy to watch most of the time and never positively painful." [9] Variety wrote, "One of New Zealand's top directors, Geoff Murphy has taken a man-alone theme and turned it imaginatively to strong and refreshing effect in The Quiet Earth." [10] Sheila Benson of the Los Angeles Times called Lawrence's screen presence "electrifying". [11] Krug brings a lot of verve to Sky, but her spiky energy isn’t matched by Monaghan’s Chris, who as written is more of a generic rich drip. There’s much more happening in “Shattered” on the margins, with quirky supporting performances by Ash Santos as Sky’s frazzled roommate (and occasional lover) Lisa and John Malkovich as the ladies’ sleazy, opportunistic landlord. This film is made to pay tribute to the unsung heroes who sacrificed their lives on the front lines of construction and disaster relief. In the 1960s, when the Chengdu-Kunming Railway was built, China had no modern equipment and was built entirely on the strength, will, and sacrifice of railway soldiers. Does China's infrastructure armed with all kinds of super equipment still have the inheritance of the selfless dedication and sacrifice of the railway soldiers? When disaster strikes, the answer is out. Put together a group of survivors using your own leadership skills, and interact with them in many different ways to survive. Shattered Earth (AKA Cloudy Mountain) delivers on all of those…not always as well as in other disaster movies I’ve watched, but well enough to keep me fully engaged throughout its (slightly overlong) 114 minutes running time.

Prieto and Loughery do make an effort, as does their cast. Lilly Krug gets a juicy femme fatale role as Sky, a mysterious seductress who claims to be a former model as she worms her way into the life of Chris ( Cameron Monaghan), a reclusive, recently divorced tech mogul. After Chris has an accident that lands him in a wheelchair, Sky becomes his live-in nurse — earning his trust for reasons that may not be so noble. Zhu Yilong and Huang Zhizhong played a father and son in the movie, through the storyline, they completed the transmission of the spirit of the times. Their acting brought many surprises in the rivalry scenes with each other. In particular, Zhu Yilong, who has completed many difficult action scenes, also showed a richer character charisma in the scenes with Huang Zhizhong. It is both heart-warming and affectionate, and it collides with many wonderful sparks, which makes me both excited and moved.

The visual effects for the most part of very effective with only a few scenes which took me out of the moment for a bit, while the English language dubbing is questionable at times, raising the odd giggle when a character was saying something dramatic…but in a voice that really didn’t seem natural.
