I would cover the perimeter first and then fill in the middle, this will mean there will be a little overlapping but not too much – if done unevenly the fertiliser could burn the grass. If you feel this rate has not been enough then feel free to adjust the amount you use and you can even supplement the feeding with a liquid fertiliser. Just be cautious, overfed grass can turn a brown/grey colour (fertiliser burn) and may even promote thatch. Wet & Dry Conditions If weeds are growing within the lawn, control them using a selective weed killer to make sure that you are not going to harm the lawn

Liquid fertiliser is generally more expensive compared to granules. Bear in mind that if you have been using granules, you will need to convert your equipment to deliver the liquid fertiliser. Don’t rush to apply. Let the grass tell you when which is generally when you start mowing regularly. Quite often in late winter or very early spring, you notice the grass finally starting to grow and so you give it a cut. It may be another 3 to 4 weeks before you mow again because it’s still cool and growth is slow. Once you get into a rhythm of regular mowing at least every 7-10 days (perhaps the fourth cut of spring) then is the time to feed. Summer Lawn Feed Because there are so many different spreaders on the market it is impossible for use to provide settings for all spreaders. Therefore you're going to have to calibrate your spreader to our fertiliser so watch the video. If the winter we have experienced has been cold and dry but still with a good amount of light then damage to the turf will be considerably less than if the winter is a wet and cloudy one due to the damage that would be caused from low light conditions and excess water from rainfall. Out of the two I recommend you go with granules. They are much easier to judge in terms of application and coverage and to ensure you don’t overlap at any point. For a nonprofessional it’s difficult to get a consistent spread across the lawn using liquid.If using a weed killer concentrate on the whole lawn apply one to two weeks after applying fertiliser. If spot treating then apply when the weeds are ready. Feeding AND Seeding

Squeeze the soil in the palm of your hand; if it forms a sausage shape and stays together when you open your hand its clay based soil. If it crumbles into a few pieces then a sandy base is more likely. Test 2: When selecting a fertiliser for over seeding where young grass development is more important always select the sandy soil option.

Some fertiliser elements, normally iron and potassium, actually harden the grass (sometimes called winterizing) and help protect the delicate grass membranes from the cold and occasional winter diseases. Therefore, all autumn and winter fertilisers should contain higher proportions of one or both for a reliable green winter lawn.
