She grew up by the sea, on the south coast of England, spending most of her childhood reading, writing, drawing and running wild. Edward Gorey (1925-2000) wrote and illustrated such popular books as The Doubtful Guest, The Gashlycrumb Tinies, and The Headless Bust. Eliot's poems are the source material for Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Cats which is what inspired me to pick this up. This book is a good way to introduce TS Eliot's poetry to young children as the illustrations make it more interesting and fun.

It has a layout and font which would appeal to children and the paper is magazine-glossy so any mucky fingerprints could be wiped off. A very good copy in a lightly toned and soiled jacket with slightly nicked and creased extremities and a couple of minor chips.

Now that my copy is starting to fall apart, I'm considering breaking it up and just keeping the illustrations. there are so many famous names here and not just made famous from the likes of Elaine Paige but the fact that many of the names have now seeped in to common culture. Now that I've read it, I was quite shocked at how close some of the songs are in the musical to the poetry. The fun thing is that I have cats myself - and I am starting to wonder if there is little but of their in this book (or this book in them). S. Eliot’s beloved cat poems Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, containing beautiful original colour illustrations by Axel Scheffler.At about the same time another English composer, Humphrey Searle, composed another narrated piece based on the poems, using flute, piccolo, cello and guitar. As their friendship deepened, Eliot frequently visited the Tandys and they also kept up a regular correspondence. The British rock band Mungo Jerry derived their name from the book's poem " Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer". I understand that some people see it as a product of the times and the lack of political correctness, but I can't get past it regardless of those factors.

Occasionally he illustrates individual lines, such as the fakir who stares at Macavity when he levitates. Rebecca works from her studio in the countryside near Stroud (UK), where she lives with her husband and two children. It always raises a smile when I finally get to read something that has had so much influence and been referenced so many times and yet I had NOT a clue about it. Okay, after I finished reading this classic, I decided to gird the proverbial loins and watch the Tom Hooper movie for the first time.I know I have read this more times than I have dates for, so this mayn't be surprising, but I wanted there to be more variety. He was also a very successful set and costume designer, earning a Tony Award for his Broadway production of Edward Gorey's Dracula. I also like his sequence of pictures that play like a succession of scenes when the poems can't provide any words.
