I honestly don’t know how I lived without it for so long. I love the format, the month by month guide, the menus, the advice, the recipes, the illustrations, the photographs – in short, EVERYTHING! However, I’m still going to keep my eye out for an original edition like my mum had. What can I say – I’m so old school!

No, I haven't cooked every recipe in it - in fact I've followed very few of them, but where it really scores is in the charts for preparation/quantities/cooking times for everything from meat t0 vegetables to pastries to sauces; it's the book that gave me confidence as a new wife in my kitchen, and even though I now have a new husband, I still refer to the book at times - and still follow the recipe for my Christmas cake (though no longer the Xmas pud, as I can no longer eat that!). Both a reference book and a source of inspiration, Autumn into Winter is essential reading for experienced and novice cooks alike, and features recipes that are simple to prepare, relying on flavour rather than complicated sauces or techniques. So I’m going to leave you with the recipe from The Cookery Year for the orange foam sauce I made many years ago with great success. It really is a delicious, versatile and – if a twelve year old can do it – easy to make sauce. It goes well with most pies, tarts, hot pudding and cakes and even Christmas pudding! From breakfasts to feeding the kids tea when they get in from school, from suppers for one or two to more elaborate dishes for entertaining on a Saturday night, or feeding the whole family their full-on Sunday lunch, Gary's recipes are some of the best things you will ever eat!
