Included in the Dungeon Tiles 1 box are enough floor tiles, plus interior and exterior walls, to craft a small to medium sized location. Being completely modular the tiles and walls can be clipped together into any shape the Dungeon Master (DM) may require. Once used the build can be completely dismantled or reshaped to become a new dungeon, or just the next stage of a larger location. Whilst this is the Dungeon Tiles 1 set, locations aren’t simply resided to being cold grey stone. The floor tiles included in the set are all double sided, featuring a stone design on one side and wooden design on the reverse. Stone walled buildings with wooden or stone floors can therefore be crafted using the set, with just flipping the tiles over giving locations a distinctive visual change.

WizKids could also have included more variety in the wall hangings, with two types in each set. In the Dungeon Tiles II set 4 torches and 4 banners are included, with 4 lanterns and 4 mounted swords and shields included in the Town & Village II set. Having 4 of each is useful for the sake of building out believable locations. Still, having two types of wall hangings in a set only makes you want more. With these sets not coming cheap it isn’t wrong to expect a little more from them. Including a unique item in each, such as a boar’s head for a townhouse or a gargoyle for a dungeon setting, would have allowed for a wider diversity of locations to be brought to life.While there is a proud tradition of running D&D games on grid paper or simply as “theatre of the mind”, there’s nothing quite like the experience of really bringing the setting to life with 3d terrain for everyone at the table to interact with.

If you’re playing on a wood surface, these could very easily scratch it up when you’re pushing the pieces together. In that case, I’d recommend connecting them in your hands and then placing them on the table. I consider it a definite “level up” in our games. It’s had a major impact and has been especially useful for making the players really want to explore everything that each dungeon has to offer. Quality The Dungeon Tiles I set comes with everything you should need for a pretty wide variety of encounters. This reveals an issue more for those that are only going to get one set, rather than a few of each or either. The wall hangings that provide some of that variety only plug into the ports on the flat walls and not the corner wall pieces. This means to have a flag or torch on a corner section the normal walls must be used. While fine most of the time, when trying to maximise the size of a build you must use the corner walls for corners, to save the normal walls for the rest of the build. When it’s time to put everything up, removing the clips is similarly easy. It will take a little bit of muscle, but they pop out easily if you just make sure you have a firm grip on the tile and the clip.

Personally, I like to build out the dungeon without the Tile Clips first just to make sure it looks perfect before I begin connecting the pieces. If it’s all looking how I envisioned, then I begin securing the pieces together with the Tile Clips. By the same token, if your group isn’t particularly big on tactical combat and fully immersive gameplay, you probably won’t get much value out of this. WizKids pre-painted miniatures can range from “awesome” to “questionable”, but there’s enough depth and texture here to really set the scene correctly. For the price, I’m actually pretty impressed! Value They definitely worked great as a visual tool to add that extra level of immersion to the games, but I also noticed my players starting to play way more strategically than when we were using the cardboard Dungeon Tiles or just drawing the map on the gaming mat.

Sure, there are better/more ornate paint jobs in some of the other more expensive terrain options, but I’m not complaining! For the money, you could do MUCH worse than these! Base sets give you all the tools you need to make the scenery for a location. Should I Buy WizKids WarLock Dungeon Tiles?

Full height 2 tall walls are perfect for players that want a deeper immersion into their game play. Offset walls provide you with the ability to place figures in any square on the grid, without pesky corners eating into your play area. Items currently discounted by other promotions are also not eligible for additional discounts via discount codes. The 1” tall walls are the perfect size. They add that depth and environment but don’t get in the way when the players at your table are moving their pieces around the dungeon. Even beyond adding the immersion for the flavor of it, it can also add a new level of tactics and strategy to your game. Since the release of the Dungeon Tiles II set there is now the option between half height (1 inch tall) and full height (2 inch tall) walls. There are a few important differences between them, though which is better will depend on the situation and personal preference. The half height style, which is what Dungeon Tiles 1 features, allows for much more visibility. However, the full height walls allow for accessories to be added and being full height are slightly more immersive. Currently WizKids has yet to announce any further sets with the full height design, whilst there are already other sets in the half height style, with more confirmed to be on the way. It doesn’t mean there won’t be more full height sets. At least for now though, if you are looking to expand your collection down the line half height is the option to go with.
