The Compendium, therefore, is also a bummerfor long-time Kill Team fans with lovingly built, storied Teams on their shelves, made up of three or four distinct types of dude. It does have its board, though, which was too big to get a good, full laid-out photo of in my lightbox. Shooting is actually explained pretty well, so I’ll ease off on that, but moving is explained to the Nth degree, and not always in the most straightforward of formats or languages. As far as I can tell, the smaller Core Rules book that comes with the Kill; Team Starter Set is largely identical to its full-sized forbearer. I haven’t been able to unfold mine and fit it in my lightbox (as usual), but here’s a picture of it folded so you can get an idea of what you’re getting.

There are 6 sprues in total in this box: 1 for the Combat Gauges and Kill Team Barricades, 4 for the Kill Teams themselves, and 1 for the Ork scenery.That’s because I’ve nicked them from the original Kill Team: Octarius review that I did a few months ago (well, I took the original pictures, so am I really stealing them?

They also come with a few optional extras: holsters, pouches, knives, and so-on – just ways to get your Space Marines stand out. A game set within a grim, dark future in which there is only war, players are able to face each other using huge customizable armies. Combined, these issueshave stoked up the (always smouldering) fires of fan anger about how GW packages out rules content.

One of the most elite factions in Warhammer, while normally kill teams require a minimum of three units, this faction has their own rule that states they can be legally played with only two models one the table. Are you considering picking up the new Kill Team Starter set or are you going to snag the individual Kill Teams instead? To make up for this, I’m going to go through this book and have a much more in-depth look at it than I would when normally looking at these kinds of books for reviews. This review is, in a way, a litmus test for seeing just how accessible a game like Kill Team is for those like me who are still pretty green around the edges.

If your figure is reduced 0 Wounds, rather than removing the model, the controlling player makes an injury roll. A box the bulk of which is made up of some spindly knife-handed robots and a pile of boring (god, so boring) cuboid scenery? Four missions are spread across the remaining pages, each one of which is designed to get new players thinking about Kill Team and familiarising themselves with the basic rules and key concepts.And, while theCompendium doesactuallyoffer afairstack of cool-looking faction specific Strategic and Tactical Ploys, Equipment options, and more, to give your Grey Knights, Tau, or Death GuardKill Teams flavour – I can’t help but notice there’s also an awful lot of blank space amongits dozens of pages ofphat datacards – each of which takes up the same half-page slot, regardless of whether it has several special rules to fit in, or none at all. These figures were teased a while back, but currently the only way to get your hands on these chaps is by purchasing this set. The new setting helps align everything with the overall lore of Ninth Edition as well, which is also sort of neat.

In particular, I fell in a sympathetic kind of love with Octarius’ Bomb Squig – gazing, as it does, determinedly across the battlefield, hand grenades clutched in its fangs, dynamite hanging off every side, ready to give its all for the Waaagh! Other times, I was blessing the movement gauge for allowing me to comfortably measure zig-zagging moves around closely placed terrain, where no tape measure could easily go.The rulebook in the Starter is the “compact” version, it doesn’t have all the same bells and whistles (like cards and dice), and the terrain set is essentially just the scatter terrain and not the full-on Orky encampment. actually works, I won’t further elongate this review by repeating the nuts and bolts of gameplay; you can learn all about its movement, shooting, fighting, list building, and more in our comprehensive Kill Team: Octarius guide.
