As opposed to being an entirely different beast, this PX finished Fettercairn clearly presents similarities to its standard 12 year old cousin. The underlying character of malty, yeasty, fruitiness is present and correct – and it’s still interesting – offering more stimulation than many run-of-the mill 12 year old bottlings. But, whether the Pedro Ximenez finish has actually elevated the experience is, to my palate, open to question. Records the default button state of the corresponding category & the status of CCPA. A single malt whisky is defined as "whisky made from malted barley, at a single distillery, aged for at least three years in either American oak or European (Spanish) oak casks, and bottled at a minimum ABV of 40%" (Glenfiddich.com). That's understandable, as you do not want to anger a distributor or brand in such a way that they refuse to provide you with subsequent samples. But what is the possible downside then?

Orange peels, juice and marmalade (there’s a lot of orange here) sit with golden syrup and dehydrated mango slices. Malty loaves and oven-baked buns are joined by dusty spices – cinnamon and allspice - whilst ripe berries (cranberry and strawberry), Eton Mess, stem ginger and crushed hazelnuts emphasise the influence of the PX finish. It’s sweet. Super sweet.

Thoughts: It’s actually a pleasant wee sipper of a dram but inevitably struggles to justify the price tag. There’s nothing radical going on but it’s a well executed example of a highland malt flavour profile. There’s some depth to the flavour profile and it feels like some decent casks have gone into it. The reason I'm starting my review in such a manner is because, while I was preparing for my tasting session, I was getting conflicting information: people that I consider ' those in the know' concerning whisky, told me that the Fettercairn 12 was, I paraphrase, ' not worth it', 'too expensive', and 'a stinker'. Additionally, to be legally classified as (Scotch) whisky, "[t]he law states that whisky must have a minimum alcohol content of 40%" (Whisky.com).

Although mainly a contributor to the firm’s blends, it has long been bottled as a single malt. A more concerted effort started in 2009 when a range of aged variants and a pair of no-age bottlings, Fior and Fasque (the name of the Fettercairn estate), was released.
