Description

The best master builders in the whole of Europe and Arabia want to demonstrate their skill. Employ the most suitable teams of builders and make sure that you always have enough of the right currency. Because no matter whether they are stonemasons from the north or horticulturalists from the south, they all want a proper wage and insist on their “native” currency. With their help towers can be constructed, gardens laid out, pavilions and arcades erected and seraglios and chambers built. Compete against your opponents to build the Alhambra. There are ways to increase your productivity. The money cards have different amounts on hem, between one and nine, and if you can pay the exact amount of a tile’s price you then get another move, with no limit on bonus moves. Most players tend to pay more than the asking price, and you are limited by the cards available at the time of your go, but I cannot stress how useful those extra moves can be.

If you don’t already own Alhambra, then you should definitely invest in the Big Box version rather than the core game. It does cost a little more, but it’s going to provide you with a lot more variety and replayability over the years ahead.

Game Components

You can exchange a building tile on your reserve board for one in your Alhambra. If you do this the new building tile in your Alhambra must go in exactly the same place as the one you remove. Each new tile must be joined to your Alhambra by at least one side (i.e. it cannot be joined just at a corner). Scoring occurs at two points during the game and once during a final scoring round at the end of play. A player’s score is based on how many of a particular structure (represented by colored tiles) they have in their building compared to their opponents, and also how long the exterior wall they have constructed is on their alhambra. In the end, the player with the most points is declared the victor. Components The player with the fewest cards starts; if two or more players are equal the player with the lowest amount of money starts. If the players are still equal the youngest starts.

Each player is given a starting tile, which they place on the table in front of them, and 2 counters in the colour of their choice. One counter is placed on the starting tile and the other in the bottom left corner of the scoring board.

End of the Game

Finally, there are some modules in the Alhambra Big Box which are a little more convoluted and cumbersome. For example, The Street Trader, which introduces citizens into your Alhambra and The Art of The Moors, which brings in culture. For me, these are a ‘step too far’. They add just too much complexity and take the game too far away from its core. Making Sense Of The Modules
