this was written in 2013 and originally set in a small dutch town, and i really liked this part of the author’s afterword: The premise was promising, I pictured a cute, funny, and witchy romcom perfect for october. And I can see that this book tries very hard to be just that, but it seems to be also trying to be 10 other things and utterly fails at all of it. Also, I am wondering if the difficulty I had connecting to the story was more from the fact that it has been translated from the original Dutch, versus the actual story itself. And yes, that can be a problem with a lot of horror: either you are ridiculous and over the top or you are scary and dark with very little or none humor. Hex Education is filled with quirky and delightful characters including a talking cat. The plot moves smoothly and is full of laugh out loud moments. I may have perhaps laughed more than most would having lived in the suburbs of Chicago almost my entire life except for my college years at a university eerily similar to the one described in the book. Overall, I absolutely adored this book and can count on Maureen Kilmer to help me escape from the massive pile of laundry sitting in my dryer and my extremely hungry teenagers. She has definitely been added to my must-read, favorite authors list and I can not wait to see what she comes up with next.

There isn't anything scary in Hex Education except for the characters themselves. I think it would make a great TV show. If you loved Kilmer's Suburban Hell you will like this one too although there isn't anything too creepy this time around. After loving Maureen Kilmer's debut novel Suburban Hell, I was excited to read Hex Education. Unfortunately, although this was a fun and fast read, I wasn't quite as *charmed* (witchy pun!) by it as I'd hoped I'd be. This one was filled with unique interesting magic, lots of actions, strong badass women, and a touch history I also felt frustrated by the disastrous use of magic. Even as things went terribly wrong, Sarah was still devoted to trying it again and again. I did not feel any of the mishaps were funny and simply felt the narrator was behaving irresponsibly. The greats of fiction Stephen King and George R. R. Martin lead the fanfare for HEX, so be assured that Thomas Olde Heuvelt’s debut English novel is both terrifying and unputdownable in equal measure.

It was bad. I'm really, really sorry, but it was. At several times, I had to reread sentences because I simply couldn't understand them (excluding the ye-olde-english-sentences). What editor passed "She fell into the eat and glory of Josh's lovemaking"??? As a huge fan of Suburban Hell, I was beyond excited to read Maureen Kilmer's newest novel and it did not disappoint in the slightest.

Olde Heuvelt, whose last name in Dutch dialect means “Old Hill,” was the first ever translated author to win a Hugo Award for his short story "The Day the World Turned Upside Down". But the dude characters are just as boring and one-dimensional as the nasty fat pâté lady. I did not care about anyone in this book. For a novel that's supposedly about a town, I had virtually no sense of anyone in the community. They were all cardboard cutouts with vaguely silly names. Like a silly haunted tram ride at Universal Studios. Josh's sister is depicted as the "dumb blonde", rich airhead who goes and gets pregnant and doesn't know who the father is (nothing wrong with that, but there is a HUGELY judgmental tone in the writing towards Siena for a lot of the book, until it eases up at the end).

Essie Winterscale lives in a huge and ever-changing house in the village of Good Winter, in deepest, darkest Essex. She lives with various witches of various ages, one of whom is still a bit salty about being hanged in the 1700s, one who keeps accidentally casting fertility spells, and one who knits things that create the future. In the end, I'm bummed by this one. I really wanted to love it as a follow up but the only thing I consider a stand out for me is the talking cat, Katy Purry. Hex Education" is the kind of book that wraps you in a cozy, magical blanket and transports you to a world where spells and suburban life mix and mingle. If you're looking for a fun and enchanting witchy read for the season, Maureen Kilmer's book is a good choice.

Al principio cuesta un poco entrar en la historia porque el primer capítulo y la escena que se nos detalla es muy WTF!!??😂😂 Pero cuando se empiezan a explicar hechos y situar en el contexto, es una auténtica maravilla 😍 Big thanks to G.P. Putnam's Sons and Netgallery for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I suspect YA readers who adored The Maze Runner will like this. I think 'Hex' is a better book, but it falls into the same kind of nonsensical plot outcomes and character behavior, especially when the author is writing from the viewpoint of some adult characters. Thomas Olde Heuvelt is obsessed with nipples. There are so many damn nipples in this book. Gross rotting witch's nipples, creepy sexual assault nipples, giant metaphorical nipples. The nipples of a teenage boy are also described in detail at one point. This dude LOVES (or possibly is deeply terrified of?) nipples.

The writing style seemed very blunt. I was always aware I was reading a book instead of being told a story, if that makes sense. Josh is adamant where the Bedham House located. He finally meets with quirky, red head- blue eyed, eccentric Essie: who is witchery kind of Elsa, rejecting to sing “Let it go”, bringing the winter, chilling the places ( her ability to freeze is convenient to chill the white wines) Once you’ve found your perfect color, copy the corresponding hex code for easy integration into your projects. I had amazing time and laughed out so loud at some chapters! Quirky hero and heroine: amazing supporting characters, enemies to lovers story with magical and witchery powers! While re-writing the work to change the setting from Beek, Berg en Dal to New York, Olde Heuvelt also re-wrote and changed the book's ending from the original Dutch version.
