Worse than that are simply coated or as Olympus describe theirs as having a “Monolayer coating” – this means that only SOME surfaces (they don’t say how many, but it is usually just the first and last lens surfaces) have received just a Single anti-reflection coating.

Thanks to the large exit pupils of the 8x40 DPS I, bright image viewing is assured, and the apparent wide-angle field of view is a versatile 65°, delivering a broader picture. I spent lot of time selecting a pair on the net- against good optics, availablity, and value for money. It looks better when you are not looking for where the aberrations start Enjoy your binoculars and don't worry about it.Also problem of blurring of images due to extreme brightness is salved by monolayer coating on the inside of the barrel. I expect they are likely to be more expensive than the Olympus DPSI though likely less than the waterproof Nikon Action EX model.

It's too easy to get caught up in technicalities and miss the wood for the trees; so far I'm enjoying the view through the Olympus 8x40, but as my experience increases I'm sure I will probably become more sophisticated in my equipment choices. But what you will find on many low cost binoculars is that they only have “Multi-Coated” optics meaning that only SOME of their glass surfaces have received Multiple layers of anti-reflection coatings. A wide field of view makes locating a bird quicker and easier, particularly when viewing over a wide area or tracking them as they fly.I bought these for myself to upgrade the brightness of my Lietz 8x20 binos (old eyes) and since then handed them to my young niece as a good starter for birdwatching and stargazing. I’ve found all your information really useful but feel like there’s some flaw in the Olympus I’m missing and would be grateful for you’re advice on what I would be missing with the Olympus.
