Replaying my favorite Mario game, Sunshine (yes, aware I'm in the minority over considering this the best Mario game), especially in handheld, has been like a dream come true for me. I think a 9/10 for this minimal effort collection was far too generous, both for those if us who've played them and for those who never have. Mario 64 looks terrible and in 4/3, Sunshine controls are not really accurate yet, Galaxy 2 is missing, and it will disapear in a few months. I mean, this is a lazy ports collection running on emulators (which is fine) and without Super Mario Galaxy 2 (which is not). But except for the visuals, the best way to play these games (at least in the last two) is still on the original hardware.

All three games play differently, have vastly different art-styles and very rabid fanbases that would question every little change from the original (Twin Snakes comes to mind as still critised today despite playing and looking way better than the original MGS). Don't quote me on this, but Galaxy 2 not making the cut was probably because of its frantic pointer controls during most Yoshi stages. You won't see sales of major Nintendo releases on its current platform of 75% or 95% at any point, unlike in the west, where overworked developers release unfinished games as a standard practice. The Crash and Spyro collections are all HD remakes of PS1 games where the three games each shared the same basic engine and controls. Something thought to be perhaps a little too Japan specific, prettied up and released world-wide for GameCube in very well localized versions, all stuffed with 10+ full versions of NES classics. It commemorates the 35th anniversary of Nintendo's Super Mario franchise, with high-definition ports of Super Mario 64 (1996), Super Mario Sunshine (2002), and Super Mario Galaxy (2007). The inability to invert camera controls in Sunshine probably means that - despite purchasing the game - I'll have to go even longer yet before fully playing it (I played it for maybe an hour back on the GC and that was about all I could take).

I recently 120 starred the PC port with 60hz and SGI mods, was glorious except for the clunky controls when using a modern controller. Even though I thought I loved all 3 games, I can't help but feel completely underwhelmed by the package overall. Critics generally agreed that the games themselves remained enjoyable, but were divided over the presentation, which received criticism for its simplistic nature and lack of additional features, its limited time release, and the absence of Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010).

Mario All-Stars while a fantastic package for it's time was a much easier thing to develop in the early-90s. This has the long term effect of keeping their products more valuable and in higher demand than the competition and allows them to offer more distilled gameplay experiences without a huge volume of lootboxes and microtransactions. The text and HUD have been given an upgrade too, meaning everything all looks nice and crisp here as well.
