The Start Collecting box that gets our vote for “the next one to be discontinued,” there’s not a ton this particular box has to offer. Tactical Marines just don’t have much value when you’d rather run Scouts or Intercessors, the Terminator Captain doesn’t bring much to the table when you have other, more mobile, better-equipped, cheaper options, and the Venerable Dreadnought is only OK. You’re better off skipping this one for the Marine half of the Dark Imperium Starter. That’s why we’ve assembled this overview of the Start Collecting!/Combat Patrol boxes to help you figure out if it’s worth buying the box available for your faction. The entry for each box in this article covers what miniatures are in the box, what the box costs, how much you save by buying the box rather than buying the units/characters in the box separately, and whether any models are exclusive to the box. Savings-wise this is decent, but the contents are rubbish. You don’t ever really want Tactical Marines and Baal Predators don’t offer much either. This really suffers from including the Predator – it would be a much better box if it had say, Death Company instead. The infiltrators are great line troops that can do board control/area denial in equal measure. The suppressors give you a decent light anti tank unit with great mobility. All that to say this release just feels bad, man.

All of these units are usable up to a fairly high level of play, with eliminators being almost must have unit in some tourney lists. Alright, we’ve spent around 650-700 points out of the 995 we had. So what’s the last chunk going to be? Well, we could opt for the safe route and just slap in another Intercessor squad. We could play it pricy and go with some Hellblasters. The Adepta Sororitas Combat Patrol Box is weird: There’s 1 Penitent Engine instead of the two that usually come in a box, 4 Sisters Repentia and 1 Repentia Superior rather than the 9 and a Superior you usually get, 3 Arco-Flagellants rather than the usual 9 and… you get the picture. This is all because most of the stuff in the box was originally part of the Adepta Sororitas limited army set, and is thus placed on the same sprues rather than being the actual multipart plastic kits, so you shouldn’t buy this box if you have a specific 2000 points competitive list in mind. One is that you can really show off the cool concept you came up for your custom chapter in the game. The second is that if you are a bit more on the tournament side of things, you can ‘hop’ from supplement to supplement, changing chapter tactics until you find the most gamey combo possible.

If money permits, I would highly suggest Betrayal at Calth as that gives you a sizable SM force and a range of bitz that lets you build up another devastator squad easily.
