Fruit teas are all well and good - and I do drink those too because otherwise I'd go through life looking like an over-caffeinated meerkat - but for a day-to-day cuppa that gives a burst of energy, a bit of warmth and a welcome break from my desk there is nothing better than PG Tips Extra Strong. It's basically the hot beverage equivalent of a bear hug in a mug.

A strong contender that is up there with any of the other big hitters such PG Tips, Tesco, and Twinings, the well-known brand of Tetley made for an enjoyable drink that more than lived up to its popular reputation. Founded in 1837 by the Tetley brothers, the tea was a strong and rich flavour and gave an appetising colour as well as a smooth texture, proving why it has been consistent in its place at the top of the British tea market for so many years. It was her who first introduced me to it at the tender age of five or six, and it’s probably about the only thing she did correctly. PG’s flavour is strong and well-rounded, much like Yorkshire, but I think Yorkshire might have pipped it to the post in terms of strength on this occasion.Tea will forever be my first choice hot drink, whether I’m at home, in a coffee shop (sue me), or making a cuppa in the office. Although the colour wasn’t as bold as Yorkshire’s, I forgave it as I knew it wouldn’t greatly impact the taste. As well as the taste being strong, it was also gentle. Tea is very much one of those products where you stay loyal to a brand until the day you die. As Brits, we drink a lot of the stuff, and so - it has to be a good, strong teabag. The box was massive which gave me high hopes, but it turned out to be quantity over quality here. The only time I'd say yes to this sad brew would be at a footie game or camping, just to warm up my hands. Its taste was also better than Tetley’s, with more body and richness to it. So if you like a strong tea like me, this is definitely a contender. Yorkshire’s colour was even better than the others, resembling a rich cup of melted milk chocolate. Twinings, the refined and everso posh tea brand which is often considered the pinnacle of tea, was up next.

I mean how can you have, “By appointment to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” on the box and not deliver on the flavour. It's even the perfect flavour and strength to dunk a digestive in. What more could you possibly want? It's perfection in a mug." Yorkshire Tea Red Label I was really pleasantly surprised by this one, it had a good taste of tea and didn't need too much brew time unlike some of the others. But there's nothing worse than popping round your mates for a cuppa only to find they don't keep your favourite brand of tea in. One might be tempted to carry an emergency brew kit in their bag for times when your loyal brand simply isn't on the menu. We certainly wouldn't judge. This cuppa was pretty average, it gave a good strong colour, and had that pleasant, comforting tea smell too. The taste wasn't too bad, however left a subtle bitter aftertaste.

PG Tips will always have a special place in my heart, and the only real competitor which might make me consider swapping brands is Yorkshire Tea. Maybe I am biased because this was the only square shaped bag, which resembled my beloved Yorkshire Tea, but it was really good. It brewed well, it gave a strong colour and had a nice strong flavour. The teabag was also quite sturdy so I didn't have to worry about breakage.

Twinings Vanilla Tea

Last but not least was my store cupboard staple, my go-to choice, my steaming hot friend who makes me feel more alive in the morning. Before this test, I wouldn't have tried another brand of tea, through fear of ending up with a cup of disappointment, but now I would definitely reconsider as the cost of food is rising, it's a good way to save a few pounds on your next shop if you're a tea addict like me. This was the worst cuppa of the lot. I was questioning if there was actually any tea in the tea bag and the only thing giving it away was that it had a brown tint to the water.

Yorkshire Tea is 100% the best cuppa you can buy, and I won't hear a jot of it from anyone else. I'd even go as far to say I'd refuse a brew at a mates house if it wasn't the green box with the red label." Twinings Vanilla Tea For me this was my previous 'go to' choice when it came to tea, though I have to admit it wasn't quite as flavoursome and punchy as the PG tips and Tesco's bags. This brand would be a perfect introductory tea for tea drinking beginners and novices, before they move onto the hard stuff. The taste continued to worsen, so much so it ended up tasting like dishwater, which was not what I expected. She’s no longer with us, dying five years ago on Christmas Eve, but the only thing she did leave me was my undying love for tea.

PG Tips Extra Strong
