Grass weeds have a habit of growing vigorously in late summer and autumn, which provides ideal leatherjacket conditions. Leatherjackets may also be revealed in lawnsby soaking with water and covering with material impervious to light, such as black polythene. We have however taken your advice and I have plenty of plants and trees due to arrive in the next 2-3 weeks ready for planting. If you still have a fair amount of grass coverage, it may be possible to revive the lawn by undertaking mechanical lawn renovation during late spring or summer to repair the damage caused by these hungry critters.

Tipula paludosa, known as crane flies or daddy-longlegs, emerge from the soil in enormous numbers during late summer. Leave it at least overnight and then when you lift it in the morning they should all be sitting on the soil surface. If a large population of grubs are found by a badger, fox or even birds, the subsequent damage to a lawn can be devastating! By encouraging more birds into my garden, I’ve reduced leatherjacket numbers to an acceptable level.
