Lens Performance - Images have a good amount of detail at both ends of the lens, but are a little soft. Purple fringing and chromatic aberration does become a bit of a problem at the longest end. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of just 1cm which allows for impressive macro shots.

Here, I’ve compared the COOLPIX P530 with the Canon PowerShot SX520 HS, which shares the same 42x zoom range, 16 Megapixel resolution and a lot of other features besides. I’ve also tested it alongside Sony’s Cyber-shot H400 which has a massive 63.3x zoom in a slightly larger, heavier body. ISO Noise Performance - Noise is low at ISO 80, 100 and 200, but there is a slight loss in detail at ISO 400. This loss in detail becomes a little worse at ISO 800 and again so at ISO 1600, with images becoming a little soft at this setting. Again, there is a noise increase at ISO 3200, but image quality is still fairly decent. When shooting in P/S/A/M mode you can use the Hi1 setting, which is an equivalent of ISO 6400, but image quality is poor, so it's best avoided unless you are shooting pictures to share on the web.Here are two 100% crops - the right-hand image has had some sharpening applied in Photoshop. The out-of-the camera images from the Nikon Coolpix P520 are slightly soft at the default sharpening setting and benefit from some further sharpening in a program like Adobe Photoshop. You can alternatively change the in-camera sharpening level to suit your tastes.
