I am lucky enough to have seen the Sutton Hoo treasures at the British Museum and have always been keenly interested in archeology so this film based on the true story of this discovery was right up my street. As others have mentioned, the 'action' takes place in the form of subtle dialogue, knowing glances, and the tension brought upon by an omnipresent looming war. Plus, there’s Charles Phillips ( Ken Stott) from the British Museum, getting him and his men in on the action, shoving his face in where it’s not really wanted.Set in the summer months of 1939 before the outbreak of war, there are sporadic references to the coming conflict through the first two acts of the movie, but they don't seem to bear much relevance to this story about an archaeological find. Netfli NFLXx NFLX unearthed some buried treasure with its original feature, The Dig, a historical docudrama based on one of the most consequential archeological discoveries of the 20 th century, that has become the streamer’s first big hit of 2021.

The Dig is actually not a very earthy film, though there is intelligence and sensitivity and a good deal of English restraint and English charm, thoroughly embodied by the fine leading performers Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes. Couple of comments: this is directed by little known Australian director Simon Stone ("The Daughter)". The treasures, the inquest, the relationship between Fiennes and Mulligan - felt like I'd been cheated. The Dig is promoted as being based on the true story of the great discovery of the Sutton Hoo Anglo-Saxon burial site, which it is - up to a point.Carey Mulligan (Edith Pretty) should be nominated except she has two Oscar worthy films, both with a deserved good chance to take home an Oscar.

Jeffers also took exception to the depiction of eminent British archeologist Charles Phillips, who comes across as a class-conscious snob quick to dismiss the efforts that Brown had taken prior to his arrival. If you love simple stories being told in a beautiful and clear manner, and if you like Archaeology, then this is the film for you. They actually found two medieval cemeteries on the site that date from the 6th to 7th centuries on a homeowner's private property. Such poetic filmmaking takes painstaking attention to detail in production to pull off at the level achieved in this film.
