The player who picks the minigame is at first chosen at random, and then the succeeding choices are made by the player who places in last at the preceding minigame. Nintendo's never been afraid to capitalise on the success of its franchises or, as some would say, beat its successful games to within an inch of their lives. It was also one of the last official first-party Wii games released in North America, followed by Project Zero 2: Wii Edition and Kirby's Dream Collection. Upon witnessing this, the character leads a charge with the others and sets out to defeat them and save the Mini Stars. While you may need to work together to defeat the bosses, you will win Mini Stars depending on your ranking and the amount of damage you have caused to each boss.

A broken bridge prevents players from moving forward, and if the players do not roll a certain total number, they fall to a lower route filled with Mini Ztar Spaces. It's colorful, good looking, and fun with others, but after so many games, the appeal just isn't going to last for many people. Mario Party 9 deviates significantly from the series' familiar template, pitching four characters together in a vehicle and having them move along the board together instead of individually.And that's how you lose them as well; by landing on the wrong space, or, worse, by someone else landing on the right space. And, if you don’t feel like playing party mode, there is always the option to go to the one of the minigame modes.

The game was released on March 2, 2012 in Europe, in Australia on March 8, 2012, in North America on March 11, 2012, and in Japan on April 26, 2012. Initially, I didn't give Mario Part 9 much thought; but after reading the changes it has introduced, I may actually end up getting it after all. The host is Yellow Toad for the boards while Blue Toad is the host for minigames, and Green Toad appears near the end of Boards to initiate an event similar to the Last Five Turns Event from the past Mario Party games. This removes an aspect of strategy (no surprise there) present in all previous iterations, which featured looping, complex game boards filled with risks and rewards. As for Boss Battles, there are two Boss Battle Spaces on every board, one near a fortress and one at the end.Minigames are played using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers, and are designed to be accessible to players of all ages and skill levels. That's not to say the mini games are poor — most of them eschew shaky motion controls in favour of holding the Wii Remote NES-style, but the games that employ motions do so with a quick shake or simple twist. In these minigames, once a player completes the goal, the minigame ends; in other modes, other players are still active even after the goal is completed.

The design of the Toad Road board for the build presented during the E3 trailer had a somewhat simpler design.
