Two men were behind the scheme to build a distillery at Craigellachie: a young local, Alexander Edward, and Peter Jeffrey Mackie, the owner of Lagavulin Distillery, Islay, and also of the White Horse brand of blended Scotch. Craigellachie was built in 1891 by the experienced whisky team of Peter Mackie and Alexander Edward.

Inspired by our worm tubs, we’ve sourced casks from other producers of oak-aged spirits who also employ worm tubs to make their liquid wares. I’d spent the afternoon drinking whisky and chatting absolute tripe with my uncle, in the Bow Bar, stationed near the bottom of the city’s most photographed cobbled Old Town thoroughfare, Victoria Street.Craigellachie 13 year old is a great introduction to the distillery style, it is a bold and distinctive whisky, at this age the tropical fruit flavour comes across as ripe banana. Lockdown restrictions had just been relaxed enough to allow us to do things like drink in pubs, and despite a puckered arse at the prospect of getting the bus 25 miles from my house in the sticks, to a pub in the city, I was glad I made the covid-flouting trip.

The use of worm tubs, wooden washbacks, and a distinctive sulfuring process during malting make Craigellachie spirit weighty – some say waxy – and fruity. It’s taking that base spirit and turning the more potent zingy notes to maximum; the underneath remains identifiably familiar, but with a top-coat of big fresh lime juice.Craigellachie has a full yet aromatic character that has made this Single Malt a prized Malt for blending since the late 19th century. There is a spicy note which is rounded so I don’t attribute that to the spirit alone and so assume the casks had a little life left in them still. For example, I really enjoyed the Bladnoch Vinaya and a Cadenhead’s Warehouse Tasting Ben Nevis 9yo, finished in a Manzanilla sherry cask, has me swooning. I think this is one of those cases where it’s a shame that you didn’t have a full bottle to review, because this is one that has a lot going on. Like peat fired kilns develop a smokey peat taste in the Whisky, Craigellachie uses an oil-fired kiln which really imparts into the bottle.
