When Simon, a K-9 companion needs representation, it’s Andy Carpenter to the rescue! When Simon’s handler decides to retire, he asks Andy to file a suit allowing Simon to retire early due to disability, instead of having Simon transferred to another handler for a year. Simon, you see has arthritis and bad hips - and if he were human, he would be granted early retirement but given the fact that he is a dog, he is not granted such accommodation. Seeing as Andy has a love for dogs, he jumps at the chance. I think my favorite character has to be Andy's wife. She is intelligent, sassy and a bit extra. Bigger than life. She put a lot of fun into the plot. I love the front cover art. I am so fond of this series. It's uplifting, fun, engaging, and full of animals and characters who are well written and believable. I really like it that Andy is trying to do his (sometimes imperfect) best in a world that can be cold and unfeeling. This book left me with a warm fuzzy feeling and was a perfect cold weather read with the holiday theme and justice prevailing and all that. Apparently the killer had had no other run-ins with the law, before or since, because his DNA was not in any database. Every few years the Paterson Police ran it through the system, hoping for a match, but they were always disappointed. I have gotten to this dubious position with absolutely no planning, and at no stage in my life could I have predicted it. But here I am. In my recollection, there has never been a bad book featuring Andy Carpenter and his assorted team of assistants.”— Book Bitch

It might be 88 degrees outside on this sunny, June afternoon yet, in my opinion, there is never, ever a bad time for a really good Christmas story. And that is exactly what you’ll find in ‘Dachshund Through the Snow‘ which is the third story, a Christmas novella in ‘The Dogmothers‘ series. The most recent title (the fifth) in this series has recently released, and I need to get caught up on this series so this unique story full of Christmas love was the perfect way to spend a bit of time. While not a Christmas Romance in the strictest sense of the phrase, Yiayia’s story is overflowing with information we’ve been looking for about her change of heart and lifestyle – and is definitely a love story, the most beautiful kind where that love shines through on the people who need it the most.

What a lovely Holiday story! Like a delicious French macaron, this holiday visit to Bitter Bark is delicious, with more complexity under the surface than you think. Agnes Santorini’s determination to adopt “the” dachshund from her dreams sends her, Finnie and fav great-granddaughter Pru on a unique scavenger-style hunt to ensure the pup they located winds up in Agnes’ arms. As each obstacle overcome brings our trio closer to the goal, each step in the story presents the reader with some more insight into who exactly is, and was, Agnes Santorini. How refreshing when characters defy stereotype. Laurie, Andy's wife, is the type of person one aspires to be; kind, generous, compassionate toward people. She is an ex-cop, and very capable of taking care of herself and Andy. Andy, on the other hand, is a lawyer who keeps trying to retire from the law and is passionate about dogs. As a self-described weakling, he depends upon Laurie and the indomitable Marcus to protect him. There are interludes of Andy at home with his family and friends, yet they avoid the over-sentimentality such interaction can bring about.Agnes Santorini, known as "Yiayia" to her Greek clan, only has one thing on her Christmas list -- a brown short-haired dachshund that matches the one she dreamed about, certain that pup can save her aging heart. When she learns that a local man has this very dog for adoption, she and her partner-in-crime, Gramma Finnie, leash up their current doxies and join forces with their great-granddaughter to get their paws on the pooch. In her eyes, the end of Christmas has always been February 1, though she has never adequately explained the reason for that monthlong extension. I think it is just that she likes Christmas, so why not continue it? It wasn’t like anyone was going to stop her; I have long ago ceded control over the family calendar. It frustrated everyone that even though absolutely incontrovertible evidence existed to tie the killer to the crime, he was still out there, free. You have to just love a story featuring the two Dogmothers with lots of their antics, disagreements, and Christmas cheer. When Yiayia, Agnes, learns of a local man selling one such dog, she enlists Gramma Finnie and great-granddaughter, Pru, to help her get this dog who will save her. As these three dash around Bitter Bark to meet the demands required to adopt this dog they come up against obstacles with every demand. While on this errand Yiayia shares the secret of her past as well as why this canine angel will save her. Even if they obtain this dog, it just might not be the one to help heal Yiayia’s heart. It just might be another kind of miracle, a Christmas miracle which heals broken hearts.
