Bodmin Jail, a historic prison in Cornwall, offers a Ghost Walk every Wednesday. This eerie experience takes visitors through the jail’s haunted history, providing insight into the paranormal activity that has been reported within its walls. Over the years, the jail experienced overcrowding, leading to several extensions and a completely new building replacing the original in 1861 (Spooky Isles). Cornwall’s mines were dark and dangerous places, where terrifying accidents led to many deaths below ground. Hauntings at Wheal Coates Mine It's not the first time a ghost has reportedly been seen at Cornwall's old jail - which is believed to be the county's most haunted location. One of the most notable ghosts attached to Bodmin, is that of Matthew Weekes. The young man was hanged in the grounds in 1844 for the murder of 18 year-old Charlotte Dymond at nearby Rough Tor.

M atthew Weekes, the so called killer of Bodmin Morr, is a regular ghostly visitation seemingly manifesting himself within the walls and confines of Bodmin jail. Another famous ghost of Bodmin Gaol is Selina Wadge. She was hanged for the murder of her younger disabled son in 1887. It has been said that she tries to grab any young children visiting the jail and also suppresses her feeling upon pregnant women.

Claiming to be in a relationship with a former soldier called James Westwood, Wadge and her two children hitched a lift with a local farmer to Launceston, allegedly to get to the rendezvous point. However, she was to return to the workhouse with only one child, her elder child, John.

It isn’t just Wadge and Weekes that refused to rest easy in the afterlife however, Bodmin Jail is full of ghosts. The spirit of Annie Jefferies, who was accused of being a witch is said to remain at the prison. It is said that she was starved to death, but the fact that it took her almost three months to die, only further served to reinforce that belief that she was in league with the Devil himself. Held on the last Saturday of every month, this four-hour event begins at 9pm and requires participants to be 18 years or older. Visitors can explore the jail’s most haunted locations and attempt to communicate with the spirits that are said to linger within the prison. It is alleged it took her three months to die, further fuelling the belief that she was indeed practising witchcraft. Reach out into that darkness and you can almost touch the will of the hands of a hundred desperate, hopeless men. Their spirits trapped in time between the prison workrooms and the disperate cells.

Many people have reported feeling tugging at their clothes and a popular experience is that of children screaming in the lower ground floor cells. In the naval area, stones have been thrown at the current owners, and loud bangs have been heard inside the empty jail from the people outside.This year they are welcoming families to enjoy the castle in October half term.
