Narrator-Sam’s first love was Real-Sam, a boy they watched grow. Emphasis on “watched grow”. Narrator-Sam was THERE (not physically yet, but consciously watching) when Real-Sam was born, and then watched Real-Sam age and grow, eventually creating their physical form so they could get to know Real-Sam. (Narrator-Sam is called Sam because Real-Sam told them to share his name… which is just super super weird to me. AND it says that Narrator-Sam modeled themself off of Real-Sam. Today is different. Today is on our side,” Sony proclaims, taking a breath, deep and dramatic. “Can’t you taste it, Neo? How sweet the air is?”Yeah!” Sony chimes in. “Like when you kill somebody, so they kill you. Like karma! That’s how quid pro quo works.” last. THE ENDING, wtf was that. 😭 the main character? she turned out to be "just in hikari's head" that's literally one of THE worst tropes ever, no one can argue. i mean, even if one of the mcs die it's better than that! idk if the author meant to show how they were soulmates through every life or whatever, but making the main character become the ghost of a hospital? is so not the right path, thanks. That being said, I think the author has a lot of good kernels. They clearly know how to craft a nice sentence. I’m confident that, with time, they will learn when and how to use those for impactful prose.

Long story short, I couldn’t stand Sam, and they are probably the most inconsistent, annoying narrator/character I’ve ever encountered.That is two instances of the author blatantly romanticizing suicidal tendencies, using their illnesses as a springboard into it. Every character, save for Eric (who is the only character I like), spoke like it was poetry night at their local coffee shop. They all had such embellished airs to them, speaking in metaphors and, somehow, purple prose. It pulled me out of the story and created an incredibly unrealistic feel. I already said these characters had little depth, but this just made it worse considering they all spoke in this equally obnoxious manner.

Neo doesn’t just write stories, he becomes them. Most of the little things he writes ring true, give a certain chill, but then again, most little things he writes get erased or tossed away. That’s how it’s always been. The author has a unique and engaging writing style that is easy to understand. He uses a first-person point of view where the characters narrate the story from their perspectives. The author is able to convey the expressions and feelings to the readers in a vivid way where the readers can feel the tension in every scene, thus creating an atmosphere of connection so that the readers can more easily get into the story. AND OH GOD THE WRITING. It was the worst part. As someone else mentioned, this book tries too hard to be quotable. Every. Line. Tries to be quotable and most of my annotations are just me telling the characters to speak normally for once. The dialogue is so unrealistic and the constant poetic language is distracting. Sometimes less is more and that goes for purple prose. Description should be balanced. It’s fine to toss in a few metaphors but not every sentence in a book needs to stand out.Another option might be to explore some of the themes that emerge throughout Lancali’s work. The idea of overcoming adversity is central to “I Fell in Love with Hope”, as Lancali portrays characters who must navigate challenges ranging from abusive parents to failing hearts. By exploring these themes and discussing how they relate to our own experiences, we can deepen our understanding of both ourselves and others. I’ll be calling Sam ‘Narrator-Sam’ for a bit here, because Sam’s first love was named Sam. That Sam will be ‘Real-Sam’.) The main character falls deeply in love with Sony’s mischievous smile and gentle giant personality. Despite his failing heart and abusive parents, he finds hope in Sony’s beauty and scars. Together they become the greatest thieves that ever lived. Neo is a writer, a bitter poet. Unlike Sony, he is silent, and unlike C, he is remorseless. His spine is fragile, but his words make up for it. He’s bony and short, so small we call him Baby, although, for a baby, he sure has a temper. I’m fairly certain he’s never worn a smile in his life. I’ve known him the longest, and though he’s scowly and mean, it’s all a mask, his protection. He’s also the smartest person I know—observant, creative, resilient—the one who plans and records our great feats of thievery. He claims that Sony and I are extroverts who’ve kidnapped him and coerced him into being our friend, but I know he secretly enjoys the company. Hospitals are lonely until you find your people.
