Purists who are concerned about the jello-effect of electronic shutters can put their minds at rest– we saw very little evidence of it. It was possible, on frames with tall elements in them, to detect a very small amount of distortion, but even with incredibly fast subjects, frames shot with the electronic shutter were just as usable as with the mechanical option. Another plus: the electronic shutter is totally – literally – silent. Wedding photographers and wildlife photographers, rejoice. That's fair enough for 8K, a mode that no other mirrorless camera offers, but even if you're shooting 4K/60p on the EOS R5, a 10-minute rest will only give you another 10 minutes of recording time. So for both of the EOS R5's most demanding modes, you're still restricted to relatively short bursts.

While the Canon EOS R5 has the upper hand when it comes to resolution, the EOS R6 has a theoretical edge for shooting in very low light. The Canon EOS R5, on the other hand, is clearly aimed at professionals who demand a lot from their gear, including highly detailed stills and equally detailed video footage. Its 45MP sensor and 8K raw video footage blurs the lines between photographer, videographer and filmmaker, especially when C-Log is used.I suspect it's possible that IF your camera had its wireless mode enabled, AND was in proximity to your phone which had also had the Canon Camera Connect App running you could have had a communications link running that drew down the battery. If you prefer not to connect via Wi-Fi to the camera when it is off, either set [ Airplane mode] to [ On] or set [ Bluetooth settings] to [ Disable]." It is similar to the reason that many modern cars can't sit nearly as long as older vehicles without depleting their battery beyond the starting point. Keyless entry systems, particularly the passive types, involve both the transponder in the vehicle and in the key fob to stay in a low power sampling mode looking for activity. So even without any content theft prevention system, most modern vehicles are never fully asleep. I shoot and review photos using the EVF, I've never enabled 120Hz mode, and the camera is still on ECO if that matters. In terms of width and height, the EOS R5 is all-but identical to that latter camera; three mysterious millimeters have been added to its depth, and 70g has been added to its weight.

Perhaps even more significant than these recording times, particularly if you're planning to use the Canon EOS R5 as your main video workhorse, are the 'cool down' recovery times it needs after shooting extended scenes. Most mirrorless video cameras overheat, but not as many need quite as long to recover as the EOS R5.

Charging a depleted battery takes approx. 3 hr. at room temperature (23°C/73°F). The time required to charge the battery will vary greatly depending on the ambient temperature and the battery's remaining capacity.

One final area where the R6’s reduced bandwidth needs are reflected is battery life – where you can expect 490 shots on the R5 using its monitor to frame up, or 320 using the EVF, the R6 is rated to shoot up to 510 shots with the monitor or 380 with the viewfinder. You have to look fairly closely at the EOS R6 to distinguish it from the R5. To our slight surprise it’s actually a little bigger – the same height and depth-wise, but about 3mm wider. Because it's aimed more at the hobbyist shooter than the professional, the EOS R6 has two SD UHS-II card slots, while the R5 caters to pros with one SD UHS-II and one CFexpress slot.The video specs for the R5 look fantastic, 8K 30P 4K 120P and the ability to pull 35MP stills from 8K video is really exciting.

The final and possibly most important information is the recharge performance. This shows the battery’s condition and its ability to supply power.Portraits, landscapes, macro, video, the list goes on and on. Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF, paired with the high-resolution sensor, IBIS capabilities and features like portrait relighting make this a powerhouse for professionals. The blue columns represent the gross usable power in the battery, which Canon won by about 10-15%. The orange columns represent the percentage of the battery’s power that is applicable to the higher-wattage mode allowing for 12 frames per second before the waning wattage fails over to a lesser framerate mode.
