The level of detail provided to the characters and their world The story is about a young girl named Coraline who moves with her family to a small town and discovers a parallel universe behind a secret door in their new house. The caveat here is that while the alternate universe is quite fun and zany, there's a sinister and evil entity lurking in the shadows that causes Coraline to come to terms with her lot in life and make amends with her family. Still, after more than a decade, this film is sweet, charming, and haunting and leaves some lasting visuals that will no doubt conjure up some nightmares. The use of Dolby Vision has made these films look more spectacular than ever before, with vivid colors and exacting picture quality, and with highlights brighter and essential dark elements darker, unleashing the full potential of HDR technology. The films were also mixed in Dolby Atmos spatial audio, bringing out more details and clarity in the sound, resulting in an even more immersive experience for fans.

Coraline 4K Blu-ray (SteelBook)

Coraline is a pretty simple story at heart. It’s a bedtime story of a monster in a hidden dimension, much like Hansel and Gretel, or a myriad of other creepy children’s fairy tales that we’ve known over the years. A sort of “be careful what you wish for” cautionary tale in children’s form. However, the story goes full blown horror (for younger viewers) in the latter half, bringing in some seriously creepy imagery and traumatic events that get softened just a bit by the children’s nature of the film. The bait and switch genre bump might be a problem if taken as just that, but the gorgeous animation and clever digital cinematography really do sell the thing. Coraline isn’t the best of the Laika animated films, nor is it the best Neil Gaiman adaptation either. It’s good, but really is brought to excellence due to the animation and ambiance of the whole thing. The cinematography by Pete Kozachik ( Corpse Bride, James and the Giant Peach) is first-rate and is a greatCoraline and ParaNorman were painstakingly remastered by the team at LAIKA, led by LAIKA CEO (and Kubo and the Two Strings Director) Travis Knight, and Visual Effects Supervisor Steve Emerson, who pored over each film shot-by-shot, paying close attention to every last detail and color to present these groundbreaking films in the most dynamic format. Character Art (2:06) – the 25 pieces of character art run automatically but can be navigated using the Chapter Stops on your remote and can also be paused. Feature-Length Storyboards (94:02) – much like Shout Factory/GKIDS editions of their Studio Ghibli films they have smartly included the storyboard version of the film. As “animatics” have become a vital part of the animation process this is an essential inclusion, especially for anyone interested in any form of animation including stop-motion. It’s a great way to compare the finished product and how much character and subtly the animators place into the completed animation. The Final Thought accompaniment to the unique animation. Kozachik imbues the film with the right amount of creativity for the cinematographic elements to unfold.
