In this full-length "Just William" novel, William and the Outlaws decide to form the Knights of the Square Table, 'rightin' wrongs' for a minor fee ('Small wrongs: sixpence. Low-budget screen adaptation of the popular Just William novels with forgotten child actor William Graham in the title role. The internals are clean throughout and the text blocks are equally clean, aside from some slight foxing to the top edge.

As I've already mentioned I throughly enjoyed this rather different look into the world of that loveable scamp William Brown and his band of Outlaws. William becomes a veritable Don Juan as he woos a visiting film star for his brother (much to the surprise and annoyance of his brother's girlfriend). But the affair at the Manor takes a completely unexpected turn and for once the Outlaws come out gloriously on top. For example, through the interaction between William's father and brother at the dinner table at the start of the book a power dynamic is highlighted (which is often strained by William's antics! Crompton's fiction centres around family and social life, dwelling on the constraints that they place on individuals while also nurturing them.

This is the only full-length William book (the others being made up of short stories) and was based on Val Guest's screenplay for the 1947 film of the same name.

The father/son relationship is brilliantly drawn, Ross has not been there for much of Jeffrey’s life and there is an awkwardness about their every exchange intensified by the strangeness of the surroundings. There follows a madcap chase finale involving William's gang, the cops and the fur thieves, but lacking identifiable locations.Shedload Theatre [2] produced a stage adaptation of Just William's Luck that debuted in 2017 at The Edinburgh Festival Fringe in The Iron Belly Underbelly, Cowgate.
