Samsung has completely revamped its smart interface and system for its 2022 TVs... but we wish it hadn’t. We won’t cover everything that troubled us about the new Tizen TV interface here for fear of you losing interest before you get to the all-important picture and sound stuff. It also plays into the screen’s gorgeous color performance, as spectacularly rich, vibrant tones now look both more consistently natural and balanced in tone than they did on the QN95A, even when using the punchy Standard picture preset, but also contain levels of shading and light nuance that you’d scarcely believe possible from a non self-emissive screen technology. The Samsung QN95B is a great choice for gamers, and not just because there’s no danger of the screen burn that can affect OLED TVs. It offers a host of features for next-gen consoles, including support for 4K at 120Hz (and even 144Hz in some cases) and VRR (variable refresh rate) to reduce tearing, plus there’s also support for AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and Motion Xcelerator Turbo Pro technology. It’s not all perfect, mind you. Left on its default settings, the Q95T’s HDR picture is overbright compared with our reference standard. This can be dialled down by lowering the TV’s contrast value to around 40, after which the panel retains all specular highlight detail, even on HDR content mastered to 4,000cd/m2. And if you switch local dimming settings to ‘high’ (a new feature for 2020 QLEDs) the overbright effects of the Q95T’s dynamic tone mapping can be minimised. Smart Features Samsung has equipped the Q95T with an updated version of its 4K chipset, the Quantum Processor 4K. The previous iteration appeared in its 2019 QLED lineup under the same name. The TV’s Tizen-based smart platform gives you access to all the major streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus as well as the usual UK catch-up apps. Some features of Ambient Mode require Internet connection, a compatible smartphone, and SmartThings app. A few years ago Samsung debuted The Wall. This is an enormous 219-inch TV made up of several modular displays that can be arranged in different configurations. As expected, this combination of the OTS speaker arrangement and Dolby Atmos yields the best audio results from the QN95B. The sound stage seems to expand in size slightly, and sound effects are placed quite accurately within that sound stage. There’s even a small amount of verticality to the presentation - though you certainly shouldn’t expect to hear any Dolby Atmos ‘voice of god’ sounds actually coming from above you.

The QN95B range includes 55in, 65in, 75in and 85in screen sizes, and for this review, Samsung has sent the 65in Samsung QE65QN95B. In addition to the 55in QE55Q95T model on test here, you can buy the Q95T in 65in, 75in and 85in variants. It has a VA-type LCD LED-lit panel with a 4K/UHD (3,840 x 2,160) resolution and uses quantum dot technology to achieve a higher brightness than standard LCD TVs. On 2020 Samsung TVs including the Q95T, 24p content is finally processed correctly, even with all of the motion settings in the Picture Clarity menu turned off. Now, slow pans in 24p movies look smooth and blissfully free of telecine judder. Samsung isn’t daft enough to get carried away where the design of its TVs is concerned, and especially not when a range (like this one) is intended to have the broadest possible appeal. So the QE55QN85B, quite sensibly, is an unstated and actually quite sophisticated looker.
