The dynamic between the Seven Devils and Loren and her friends was entertaining and a great touch of “found family”. And I mean, Max rendered speechless by Dallas was priceless. The world building is lazy at best. There is no coherent theology, geography, or mythos. Vampires and werewolves and demons and witches and the like make up the dominant demographic, with humans like the poor protagonist being second class citizens and erstwhile food sources. The city they call home is apparently the only inhabited place in the world. Loren is painfully unsubstancial and written in a way that infuriated me as I couldn't establish what kind of personality she was supposed to have.

While not so original (and I'm saying this kindly, because, seriously, it felt like reading House of Earth and Blood all over again), I have reasons to believe those readers who finshed and rated this book positively. The pacing of this story is excellent considering how MUCH happens in this book!! It is laid out in such a way that you are never left confused and asking questions, but you are also never overwhelmed by too many storylines developing at once.

This book was excruciatingly slow and it was very complicated (for me) to not roll my eyes at the cheesy and cliché dialogues. I loved how the hero and heroine definitely had attraction from the beginning, but there was no insta-lust or insta-love. Despite it being quite the slow burn, the entire novel still felt very romantic, it was a big part of the story and the internal conflict of the characters aside from the problems they were dealing with externally together. The chemistry between the MMC and FMC was lovely, and their growing affection was totally believable and realistic. There is some satisfying steam (explicit, not FTB), and I've been lead to believe there will be even more in the upcoming book(s). Ugh. Weepy damsel Loren is just a worthless human, and mean people keep being mean to her! Superhot tattooed former addict, current smoker, noted philanderer, and violent psychic demon dude is hired to capture her, but oh so unexpectedly decides to HELP her instead, cause reasons. Loren is a whiny child about it, of course, throwing tantrums and refusing to accomodate common sense requests like Please Don't Be An Utterly Selfish and Stupid Waste of Skin. There are some other characters too, but none of them have any personality - there's Big Guy and Tech Bro and Evil Stepmother and Bitchy Bestie, as well as many other one dimensional placeholders. They are all tired tropes, stilted stereotypes, and excuses for "twists" that were telegraphed so hard Samuel Morse would be jealous.Loren's characterization: I think Kayla did a fantastic job of writing such a relatable and vulnerable character that was not necessarily a badass but she didn't need to be one to stand out. She is led by her emotions and some may consider that a weakness but in her case, I see it as a strength because she does not live in a kind world. She does have fears but is such a courageous person. The plot is immaculate, engaging, and intricately woven. The book starts out with the action right away and is so easy to get into. The world building is sprinkled throughout and I fell in love with the city of Angelthene, I wish I could visit. City of Gods and Monsters has all of the usual supernatural beings like witches, werewolves, and vampires. But Edwards also made it so unique with adding Hellsehers in to the mix who are essentially supernatural bounty hunters and are badass. It was utterly adorable to see them slowly come to care for each other and let their walls down. I admit I was hoping for a bit more spice, but what we got was really really good. It was super hot.

I absolutely adored Loren. She’s young but not clueless, innocent but not weak, self aware but never whiny, and selfless to her very core most of the time at her own expense. She failed to make the same mistakes that commonly befall younger heroines trying to “find their way” and won my heart over SO fast in the process. She also suffers from an illness that closely resembles diabetes. Seeing that represented in a MC meant the world to me as someone who grew up with a relative diagnosed with diabetes at a young age who never had strong female characters to relate to and admire in that sense. Watching Loren’s growth and self-confidence build her into the strong force you knew she had the potential to be all along was incredible and I can’t wait to see where her newfound strength takes her next…I have a feeling she’s really going to need it.
