Earlier in 2020, I started exploring whisky from the Glenglassaugh distillery. The first whisky I tried was the first release of the series, the Revival release. It’s named to celebrate the reopening and revival of the distillery. Today it is time for the second release in the series, the Glenglassaugh Evolution single malt whisky.

PALATE: White pepper and dry oak with hints of malt. Only later does some of the fruitiness come through. Some alcohol heat. The sweetness promised by the nose has disappeared. There are hints of lemon rind, which softens with the addition of a bit of water. The water softens the alcohol and pepper heat but does not bring any more sweetness. Medium body with not a lot of complexity. The finish is of medium length, with the bitterness and pungency carrying through. Mandarin peel and ginger notes persist until the end. Comments: Neat: Spicy entrance on the palate, with a subtle woodiness that enhances the velvety mouthfeel. While the pineapple note is less prominent than on the nose, it’s still a pleasant citrusy presence. The taste evolves to salted caramel and a generous amount of pepper, followed by subtle hints of vanilla and honey. There’s also a slight tartness of grapefruit and green apple, indicating a touch of youthful character. Neat: The nose has a subtle wine-like feeling, accompanied by hints of plums, orange, green apple, and a touch of rhubarb. There are also floral tones, along with notes of wood spices, honey, and caramel. Eventually, in 2011, a whisky appeared – Revival, the first spirit to be distilled at Glenglassaugh in more than 25 years. It wasn’t enough to keep things going, however, and in 2013 a seasoned player stepped in: The Benriach Company. The Benriach Company Retasted April 2018... Brilliant gold. Super pure with scents of beeswax, pineapple pudding and fruit’n’nut chocolate. Rounded and poised with a chocolaty edge to the malt, following through to a juicy, textural finish featuring tangy tropical fruits and a spicy burst that fans out in the mouth. Fine sweet-dry balance. Delicious. 50% Alc./Vol. A late-Victorian distillery, Glenglassaugh was built in 1874 by local businessman James Moir and 18 years later became part of Highland Distillers. It didn’t have a huge amount of time to prove itself as a downturn in the market saw it close in 1907 and not re-open until 1960, when once again the market was showing a sharp increase.With water: When water is added, the palate opens up to reveal more fruit flavours, including apple and citrus notes. The smoky taste is still prominent, but a hint of vanilla begins to emerge. Finish: While the Glenglassaugh Evolution whisky is an improvement over the Revival expression, it falls a little short in terms of complexity. However, it’s worth noting that the whisky is relatively young, which may account for this. Rating: 83/100 Whiskybase B.V. Neat: The palate showcases a much stronger wine-like character than the nose. It carries a slightly tannic taste, reminiscent of the sediment found at the bottom of a bottle of red wine. Along with a ginger spiciness, there are notes of mandarin peel and grapefruit juice, although it finishes quite pungent.

With water: Reduction brings out a slight fruity note, with hints of apricot and pear emerging. However, there are not many other notable changes to the aroma profile. Palate: NOSE: Delicious sweetness with white grapes, green grass, cinnamon and vanilla. Warming and inviting. A bit of alcohol on the nose, and it needs to stand for a bit to breathe. The nose is lovely and promises many delights. First tasted November 2013... [ from a 20 ml sample]. Brilliant pale straw gold. A brief shellac and glue blemish turns to peppermint and honeycomb - a combination that's a sheer delight. Gains more vanilla and toffee with aeration. Delivers semi sweet, caramelised fruit flavours before crescendoing with a tingly, warm and spicy flourish that hollows out the profile towards the finish. Ends dry, numbing but long. Sound balance at this high ABV.
